Timing question....I know I know. Sorry

Soooo....my 66 CJ5 has the 225. Everything is great except....can't get her to run right. New distributer (PO) new plugs and wires. Found TDC and it's NOT 180 out. I have spark on four wires which I used a timing light to determine. When I put the light on one and check the timing mark she's way way advanced at idle. So my guess is at this point that Ive got an even fire distributer in my odd fire engine. Although my engine may not be original because every one I see online is green and mines orange. Who knows what happened in the last 50 years. Thanks for any help!!!!!

So also I get it to run somewhat smooth and then when I tighten down the distributer it pops and backfires awful. Don't quite get what's going on?

Casting number on the back top of the motor is
    • 991503 which I'm pretty sure means it's odd fire 225.

Also could my distributor be off a tooth? Would that mess things up but still run? Thanks again for any advice!!!

    Double check your firing order.

I wish I had the answer...Don't give up. This is a great forum and someone will come along and get you going.

    - Have you confirmed the wires are set in the correct firing order?
    - Plug gap?
    - Is the vacuum advance working?
    - Have you done anything to the carb? I know it's a fine line setting timing and carb idle. What comes first... The chicken or the egg?

If I recall I think you want to be idling around 600 rpm.

I have the plug wires right on the firing order. Gap is right on the plugs. Vacuum advance is working. Carb seems fine and it always starts. I'm still curious what happens when the distributer is off a tooth. The timing mark advanced so far makes me wonder.

When you say the timing is so far advanced...I assume are you referring to your initial timing. NOt that it should make a huge difference, but is the vac advance disconnected and plugged? This would make more of a difference if the vac advance is connected to manifold vacuum as opposed to ported vacuum from the carb at idle? Can you adjust the initial timing (by turning the distributor) enough to get O degrees BTDC? When mine has been a tooth off it will run rough, timing is like 20 degrees out but not able to adjust the timing to get back to zero.

You may have some issue with even fire distributor or cap (check distributor cam shaft to verify even vs odd fire)....and of course make sure all the wires are connected to the correct plug. I had a plug wire crossed once that took me 2 hours to find and I swear I checked the wires 10 times before I found it.

Others are welcome to correct me if I am off in my suggestions....

Can not get to 0 degrees when running. It's running more than 20 degrees advanced. Yes,I unhook the advance when I mess with it. The cap is the kind with the little window and all the contacts are evenly spaced. The vacuum advance is on a port in the carb!

"Sometime '71 to '74 Buick bought the 225 V-6 back from AMC Jeep and rebored
to 231 cu in. The engine stayed odd-fire until sometime in early or mid '77,
when the engine was changed to even-fire by revising the crank throws (and other
modifications). The odd-fire V-6 was gone forever."

How do I tell if it's an even fire distributer???

I don't know. Like I said. It's the kind with the little window to adjust the points.

I think it's a prestolite! The rotor contact is elongated and the post are evenly spaced for the plug wires. Is that what you are asking when you say Brand?

You probably have a Delco or Delco style?

You might have to start from scratch by pulling the distributor find TDC and reclock it. Maybe take it to the parts house and talk to someone who knows their stuff...Or old big books. You could have the correct distributor with the wrong cap or vise versa?

In the long run...I have a Prestolite that I removed from my 225 when I upgraded to a HEI system. It's free for the price of shipping. After running HEI I'm never going back to points.

    Get yourself this too.

I better let someone who really knows what they're doing jump in.

That looks like my cap but the rotor is totally different. It's a big round disk with an elongated contact!

I live in NY. Would definitely be interested if you find out how much it would be to ship. At least I'll know for sure it's odd fire!!!
