Offset Camber & Caster

    I got Spicer part# 612-1048 for mine. This part number is for .75 degree correction . Other increments of correction are available but this number should give your parts guy something to go on. This is a bushing that works with the upper ball joint and I believe is the latest product of the type to come out from Dana/Spicer. I used this to correct camber on my front end. My right fron tire was wearing rapidly on the outer edge. I had an alignment shop look at it and thr readings were Driver's side camber +1.12, Passenger side +1.76

    Anybody know of another source for steel shims? I've been wanting to order a pair from 4Crawler since early Feb., and they keep updating their message that they're going to be closed. I really was hoping to get some before Windrock. How bad is aluminum? Would they last until I can get steel ones?

    has both aluminum and steel shims. I can't link you direct to the page, go to the catalog, look up degree shims.
    I've heard of aluminum disintegrating in as few as 100 miles. Steel is your friend :D

    I am guessing that RE's shims would need to be cut down to fit my narrow springs?

    Yep, any machine shop could do it, taking what, about 3/8" off of each side of a 2.5" wedge to get it down to 1 3/4. Or, just mark them yourself, clamp it down, get some earplugs, face shield and a 4 1/2" angle grinder and grind them down yourself.

    In fact, Tumbleweed on this board is where I first learned about using these wedge shims to correct caster. He described to me how he made his own with some thick stock and an angle grinder. It might still be in our archives somewhere

    I think I still have a key to the machine shop where I went to school. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes or so on the mill.

    I Have PS on both the '78 and '79. Given +0.7 & +0.6 on the '78 as it sits today, I would think the 4* shims would be my best bet.

    What do you think?

    Holbrook Specialties also makes steel caster shims. # is 503-655-4747. Don't mess with the aluminum ones. They have a tendency to split down the middle.

    Exactly, I ran aluminum caster shims on my old CJ-6 and the axle u-bolts lost their torque when the aluminum shims broke.
