Finally got our new toy home and it looks like the front axle has been replaced. The rear looks like its the original Dana 44 with 9" brakes but the front looks like a Dana 30 with 11" brakes. Now Im wondering what year the Dana 30 came out of and how can I tell if the ratio is the same as the rear? Is this anything to be concerned about? Thanks Don

Check for the usual tag on the differential.

If it's unreadable take the cover off (you needed to change the gear oil anyway right? ;) ) and the numbers are stamped on the gears. Divide the larger by the smaller to get the gear ratios.

Chances are they're the same, someone might have been goofy enough to not match 'em I guess.

lock the hubs, put it in 4 hi and see if it rolls. If it rolls ok it is most likely same gear ratio.

My CJ is also a 70 but the rear dana 44 has the stock 10" brakes. Seems like most of the V6's had 3.73 gearing. I put in a later (about '78) dana 30 up front with disc brakes. If yours has 11" drums it's fairly old - you might try the Jeep tech section at offroad.com for axle info.. If you really think someone swapped the axle without matching the gears do the roll test like 181jeep said.

Just tried the rolling method with the Jeep in third, hubs locked, transfer in 4 high and the Jeep rolled if a foot or so is enough to tell. There was a tag on the front axle that was marked "5354908 3.54 46-13" so Im assuming its a 3.54. Couldnt find a tag on the rear so I guess Ill change the gear oil and check inside to make sure they are the same.

one foot isn't enough. Another method (if no locker(s)) is to lock the hubs and jack both wheels on one side off the ground. TC in 4 high, and tranny in neutral. If both tires stay in sync, then all is well.

I would want deeper gears than 3.54
