I'm putting original seats in my 55. The old seats were not original and used different mounting holes. Is there a diagram or does anyone know where the mounting holes are supposed to go? Original driver and passenger (forward folding). Thanks for any help and guidance

For the drivers seat there should be a series of three holes in the drivers doorway for the left leg of the drivers seat. There should be a threaded strip of metal underneath to bolt the seat leg to (maybe 1/4 x 1/2 x 4 inches). This will give you a little front to back adjustment. There should be one bolt hole on the transmission tunnel for the right leg of the drivers seat. This right leg should have a rearward bend with three holes for the adjustment. There should be one leg off the back of the seat (again with a rearward bend and three holes) that would bolt at the top of the floor riser behind the gas tank. If the seat was bolted to the rearward hole on the door opening then the other two legs would be bolted through the forward hole in the seat frame. For the passenger seat there should be some holes for the passenger seat hinges on the top of the toolbox (forward of the toolbox door and maybe 3" or so back from the toolbox edge - there should be a hat channel inside the toolbox to support these hinges). There should be two holes for the right hinge. For the left hinge I believe there are two sets of two holes depending on which passenger seat you have (bucket seat or the narrower passenger seat - the 1/3 of the split bench seat).

Put them all the way to rear, and forget them, unless you are less than four feet tall.

Thanks Framer Mike and PeteL. Pretty sure my tub isn't original and may be a repro. The P.O. did a good job on the old seats but trying to put the original seats means I'll have to drill the holes and weld in supports. I want to keep the original look.

Should I butt the seats up against the wheel well and go from there or is there a diagram or source somewhere that shows measurements on where the actual holes are located?

Here are a few pictures of the seats in the tub now. As you can see, no holes. That means no bracing on the underside of the tub. Is this the correct placing of the seats? They are touching the wheel well here. The driver's support does not hit the tunnel; I'm assuming I need spacers for this. Do I need bracing or will washers and bolts work?

Well, your first problem is that's not a CJ-5.

    3B?

The driver seat won't fit properly if it came out of a 5.

other than that i'd say you have them back about an inch too far.

I have a repro tub on my 55 as well and probably would not have accurate dimensions for the drivers seat. I did dig out my original 55 tool box and measured the passenger seat bolt locations. The bolt centers from the forward edge of the tool box are 3 3/4". From the side of the body I measure 5 1/4" 6 5/16" 24 11/16" and 25 3/4". I agree with Howard that from your picture they look too far back and wonder if you moved them forward if the center leg would touch the floor - the shape of the door opening could be lifting the front of the seat. As Pete mentioned getting them as far reward as possible would not be a bad thing though in which case spacing that leg with washers would work.

Honest question; why do you say it's not a CJ5? Vin runs at a '55 CJ5; roughly mid year. I can get the actual # if that helps. From that, I assumed it was a CJ5. Bought the seats because of that assumption.

Framer Mike, I'll position the passenger seat to those measurements tomorrow and see if that works on this tub. THANKS!

Just to be clear, there are no holes and I can move the seats wherever I need to to set them. The driver seat does not fit on the right leg no matter where I position it. When the pics were taken, the mount on the door opening was just forward of the crease, flat on the horizontal portion of the opening.

I threw my steering column in there and sat in the driver's seat for a minute and I think it'd be best if it was mounted as far back as I can go with spacers on the right front leg. I did read a thread about spacers in this forum CJ5 Seats Are these spacers what I would need?

Do I need any backing on the underside of my body?

maybe it's just the angle the photo was taken from but the sides do not kook lie CJ5 sheey metla, they look like flat fender pieces.

Looking a bit closer i do see a 5 style cowl support so I guess I'm off the mark on that one. :(

Here's a side view I took a few days ago. Don't judge my garage door - apparently finishing nails don't hold up that long...

The tub appears to be aftermarket because it has no mounting holes for the seats, no top bow sockets, no pto hole, and several other features. I know later tubs had re-enforced seatbelt mounts too, but don't know when those were added.
Is the chassis also aftermarket? I know the '55 had reversed shackles, but I'm not used to the round front crossmember and round crossmember by the rear shock mounts, also the rear crossmember seems to have a wider horzontal section on the outriggers. The front frame horns look different too. I never seen a frame like this one.

    A numeral "5" backwards looks kinda like a "3".

Yep. Went with a throttledownkustoms frame. YJ spring conversion and integrated saginaw steering mount. Didn't have them put a front bumper on because I wasn't sure what I wanted to go with. Now I wish I used what they were offering
