Ground Wire On Gas Tank Sending Unit?

1963 CJ5, f134, under seat tank.

My weekend project is to try to get the gas guage and temp guage working.

Does the sending unit need a dedicated ground wire? I've seen several wiring diagrams. Some show a ground wire and others do not. Would it hurt to have a dedicated ground?

I haven't had a chance to crawl under the dash yet to see what is what.

I downloaded the troubleshooting guide and will try to figure it out.

Wouldn't hurt to have a dedicated ground. I grounded my tank. The tank usually grounds through contact with the body and the tank strap. Overtime, dirt and grime build up can cause the ground not be as effective. Search this site, there is plenty of information here concerning troubleshooting and fixing instrument cluster gauges.

 

What is the best way to ground it? Run a wire from one of the brass mounting screws? There is not very good contact between the tank and strap. In fact, it has a chunk of towel stuffed between them to silence a bad rattle. Maybe I need to fab a new strap that fits tighter?

The guy I bought it from said the guages worked until he installed a new tank and sender.

 

On My Jeep I used the factory wiring harness, and the gas gage wires were one to the screws that hold the gage in and the other went to the terminal on the gage. I made hardwood spacers to lift my tank up about 1/4" so water that got under the tank could dry out and I could blow sand out with a blow gun. Good Luck

 

Run a ground wire from one of the 6 mounting screws on the sender over to a good ground on the tub. Try to place it where it won't get kicked or knocked loose.
