    I like the idea.

    But... to be devils advocate... it still only offers a gear spread of 4.03:1. No different than a close ratio T18 or T19; it just brings the overall gearing up a little higher. 4.88 axle gearing with the RUG would be numerically identical to a rig with 4.10 gearing with a close ratio T18. Why not go with a wide ratio trans and higher axle ratio and get a lower first and a higher fourth?

    Yeah but 1st gear on a T18 (or any other "granny gear" trans) is not used the bulk of the time. This trans would give you 4 usable gears with an overdrive ratio.

    Things to keep in mind.

    Those HD granny gear transmissions are huge and heavy.

    Wide ratio transmissions require wide power bands to use effectively.

    Numerically lower diff gears are not only stronger but usually “already in there”. Not the case on 5.38 equipped earlies but still more common overall.
