A buddy of mine with an '80 CJ7 had a similar issue after a clutch install. It was weird, we couldn't figure it out until we pulled the tranny again. It turned out that the nose sleeve had broken away from the front bearing retainer, so when releasing the clutch the TO bearing and the sleeve part of the bearing retainer just chattered heavily.
I think that was a real oddball problem, shouldn't be a common occurance.

    This is NAPA's price:

    (and these are available locally)

Of course this is what I get if I type in something close to my Jeep:

Browse Catalog >> Engine Parts & Gaskets >> Motor Mounts & Related Parts
    Vehicle: 1971 >> Jeep >> CJ5
There were no matches for your search. You may want to try:

I had the exact same problem in my 69 CJ5 with 3.73 gears. I had the flywheel resurfaced and it cured the problem. A friend described to me why I needed it done but I forgot. I'm sure someone here could relate the hopping with the flywheel though.

I am amazed how my questions are always answered here. Just last Sunday, I removed my skid plate in preperation to drop my new twin stick setup into my '70 and I noticed thie bracket that's being talked about here. I was wondering what it was for. Nothing was connected to it and the bracket on the cross member isn't there. I didn't have either bracket on my '69 that I have totally disassembled. Both have the v-6 / t-14/ d18 drive train.
P.S. , I've never had the hop problem in reverse.

My 68 had the hopping problem for years. A few months back I replaced the motor/trans mounts. My jeep did not have the xfer case mounted, so I rigged up a mount with a bolt/bushing and mounted it to the cross member.

Not sure if it was the motor, trans, or xfer mounts but no more hopping.

So I've installed a new tcase mount and a new tranny mount. So I'm guessing new motor mounts. So I'm going to start a new thread and figure out the best way to replace motor mounts.

If the flywheel were somehow messed up (rust?) from years of dissuse would it work itself out eventually? Why wouldn't I get chatter in the other gears too? Why just reverse?

Does the hop happen with the clutch fully engaged or only when releasing the pedal? Mine hops sometimes whenreleasing the clutch. I have had the flywheel resurfaced. All motor and trans mounts are known good. I have given up curing the problem and consider the problem to be an eccentricity of the "beast." AM

Ran across this in the service manual:
Clutch section - last page (p.236 in my book):
"Note: Should clutch chatter in reverse develop on a vehicle equipped with the V-6 engine, installation of Anti-Clutch Chatter Kit, Part No. 992824, will correct the difficulty. Make certain that the clutch linkage is tight and in proper adjustment."

Just a guess, but I'll bet that part # is the cable you guys are talking about.

when letting out the clutch in reverse everything is getting pushed pretty hard. reverse is a pretty tall gear to be trying to start out in, and every mount in the jeep has basically worn into shape by being driven forward (ie torquing things in a different direction), or at least that's my take on it. i had to replace my clutch disc (had oil on it) and all the mounts in my jeep to cure the problem. i don't exactly know what the culprit was because i did all the work at once, but the day after i did the work all chatter and other nonsense was taken out of play. besides, the jeep was old and neglected, it needed everything changed to make sure something else wasn't going to fall apart. it's when you skip things that it really becomes frustrating and time consuming... and working on a budget makes it doubly frustrating/

what i meant by mounts... transmission, transfer case, and motor.
