So I'm getting ready to blast some parts of surface rust. Have some original seats I'd like to do this weekend. I've read walnut shells or glass beads are good for this kind of stuff. Love to hear any more advice from those of you who have tackled it!!!

    Thanks!!

I think glass beads would be good for the seat frames. What kind of blasting equipment will you use? Air volume and pressure are the biggest factors in sandblasting.

I was wondering that same thing? Walnut she's OK? I was given 3 25 lb boxes. I just bought a small hand held. It runs at 120 psi.

I've never used the Walnut shells but there's only 1 way to find out the results. It certainly can't hurt to try them, I would imagine they're ground pretty fine?

Yes sir really fine. I think they're close to glass beads. My brother had mentioned them to me in casual conversation. But you're right... Only one way to find out.... Was surprised I couldn't find a stream on blasting.

My understanding of walnut was that it was soft, and wasn't good for rust, but good for paint. I may be wrong....

Surface rust shouldn't be too hard to take care of, at least it normally isn't.

Now you need to protect the exposed metal immediately.

Seat frames would work best with sugar-fine sand. Seat frames won't warp and distort like sheet metal. I use glass beads and crushed glass for more delicate parts as glass isn't as aggressive as sand, garnet, or black blast. Walnut shells are very soft and clean without really disturbing the surface. I use walnut shells for cleaning carburetors where it doesn't remove the green/yellow coating, or for transmission gears.
If you end up doing sheet metal, keep pressures low so you don't warp the metal. Many tubs, fenders, and hoods have been ruined by sandblasting.

As long as you got any actual rust scale and paint completely off you're good to go. Agree with Donny about the fine sand being better.
