Problems With A New Supertop For My 71 Cj5

    I have been tracking down a black Bestop Supertop, for my 71 CJ5, for a while. Most dealers are out of stock and Bestop was saying things were backordered until April or so. I found that Summit Racing had 2 of them in black denim. I ordered one and received it two weeks ago. Last week end I went to install it. I was checking the list of parts making sure I had all of the parts (the box was a little busted up on receipt) and of course not all of the parts were there. I had four pieces missing and in their place I had four parts that were incorrect. I sent an email to Summit on Sunday afternoon explaining the situation. I followed it up with an email to Bestop.
    I received a robo-return email from Bestop. Blah.. Blah.. Blah….’thank you’… ‘you’re important to us’… ‘someone will get back to you’….
    On the other hand I received a non-robo reply from Summit within 3 or 4 hours, Sunday evening. The emailer was asking good questions about my reason for returning the top. Monday I received a second email from Summit customer service (2 different names/addresses not a generic “info@summit”) After a couple of emails back and forth with the second contact I was sent a UPS link that allowed me to print the prepaid return label. The box went out UPS ground yesterday. Summit is holding my money and will replace the top once they have received and checked out my return. So far I like what I am getting from Summit's customer service.
    I will post results later.

    I have always got good service from Summit, and will also be looking for a top for my CJ5 soon, so will probably check with them first.

    I bought a Bestop "Tiger Top" for a CJ2A in 1989 but never used it. It sat in the rafters of my barn up until 2002 when I moved up here where it was lost and forgotten in the labyrinth maze of my garage until I bought a CJ2A last Spring and remembered that top. I dug it out last Summer and was surprised to find it was still like new, even the windows were still soft and clear. I put it on the CJ2A I was fixing up last summer. They make good tops, but the price has more than tripled since 89.

    even with back ordered parts

    I've been buying parts from summit for years. And hands down, they've got one of the better customer service departments to deal with. Half the time, even when it's been *me* ordering the wrong parts, and I tell them that it's my own damn fault, they'll still work with me to get me the right parts.

    The return went smooth, so far. I received the UPS return label and the top shipped last week. Tracking the package online shows it was delivered yesterday. I sent an email off today asking what the time frame for shipping the replacement is this morning. I ordered this one month ago and the website said they only had 2 in stock. I am waiting to see if they still have the other.

    Just a quick up date.
    Summit refunded my money without an issue. Unfortunately, they do not have another top to send me. Now I will start the hunt for a top all over.
