13 years ago I took this apart and I can't figure out how to mount the alternator. Pictures I have seen show the alternator on the passenger side. I picked up a bracket that is supposed to be correct. It does not clear the blades behind the pulley of the alternator. The bottom support bracket mounts at the bottom of the engine block. But the bottom radiator hose is in the way.

The alternator and crank have a double pulley. The water pump fan has a single pulley.

2-15 of the technical service manual shows the belt to the driver side for the alternator.

Do I have the wrong brackets?

There are different brackets for the alternators but the one you have appears to be the correct one for your 74. I found two different ones: 74 and 75 and I think up. Hope this helps. 75 up.jpg

When you look at the timing area, the timing gauge obstructs the path of the belt on the driver side. If alt was on driver side, that would not be an issue. Alt on passenger side, I would have to see if belt clears the timing gauge. I don't see where I would mount brackets on the passenger side. Maybe I don't have the correct alternator.

You need the 1974 water pump , Yours is for 1975 and newer.
The 1974 water pump out let comes straight out , not at the 45 degree
angle down which will then clear the alternator mounted to the lower
left side of the engine block .

Does the 75 alternator bracket have bigger dimensions? My present alternator won't fit in the 74 bracket.

Where does the 75 bracket mount on the engine?

I picked up a different alt. bracket. My alt. fit in the bracket nicely. Searching further, I learned from the ID # (508A12) the engine is a 72. As melvinm posted, the water pump is from a newer year. And my alt. does not fit in the 74 alt. bracket.

My water pump pulley doesn't line up with the alt.

Would it be easier to get a different water pump with a flange for the pulley that is further out on the shaft?

    Or find a different pulley?
