I have finally completed my D18 twin stick conversion / rebuild. I used the case from my '69 parts jeep to rebuild so I could keep driving the '70 'til I was ready to swap in the rebuilt t-case. The rebuild was easy enough after buying a few tools i.e. bench grinder, dial indicator & magnetic stand ( Habror Frieght), 12 ton press (ebay), various pullers -always can use this stuff. Found the synchro ring in the warn overdirve in three clean pieces so I'm waiting for one from Herm. The finished case looks something like this:

So today I go to drop out the t-case from the '70. When I got it out I found this at the back of my t-14:

Some of my balls are missing  I don't know if they are in the t-case ( quick visual - didn't see them). I don't think they are in the tranny because I don't think they can get past the gear in the back of the case. All teeth from what I can see in the trans and intermediate gear are there. Surely one of those ball bearings would do some damage.

Anyone ever found this and/or have any ideas where they could have gone? Can I just swap that bearing out with the one in the ''69 t-14 by sliding it off the output shaft? I would just swap the trans out but there is some rust inside the '69 trans and I found a crack on one ear that bolts the trans to t-case. IMO this trans needs a rebuild . What do you think? Hope I did the pics right.

wouldn't waste the time swapping bearings, get a quality new bearing.

did you check if the balls fell into the transfer you took off. I don't know how it would go into the tranny

Looks like you've lost the ball cage which usually holds the balls equally spaced. My cage went away... gears ground 'em up into fine metal dust in the oil. Rebuild time.

That is one nice table to set the thing on! I have never lost the marbles out of the tranny. I bet you find them down in the soup. Use a magnet.
    Good luck!

I agree the cage is gone, pretty hard for the balls to get out looks like you got it just in time.
