Snow Plow Thread

We used 7018 rod to help with wear surfaces at the batch plant. Some locals use UHMW "plastic" for wear plates on small plow blades like atv's use. Hard part is attaching them so the bolts don't wear off.

 

If you aren’t plowing hard surfaces like asphalt/ concrete, get a length of 4” pvc. Cut a slit down its length wide enough that the pvc grips onto the plow edge.

the pvc will glow over the gravel but will still move snow.

my driveway is all gravel and this modification solves my problems

 

I cut a slit in steel pipe and put on my plow.......About 5 years ago........

Had to weld up the wear spots this fall........

Yesterday was a snow bust, but we got around 4 inches today. That's enough to do some plowing but not enough to get the tractor out:

Compared to winter last year, this year is a bust. I should have feet of snow in my yard. Thus far I have less than 6”.

if this continues, it will be another bad year for forest fires.

 

We got 6-8” Tuesday night. Trashy wet snow. Unfortunately I was gunning to get it cleared before the well guys showed up to take pictures. Lots of trees down, three folks rescued, one arching alder felled, and lots of other trees on my mountain road downed on their own under the weight of the snow.

 

A little more snow today. A few of the drift areas were around a foot deep so I added some ballast:


They need to earn their kibble.

 

Shortly after that I was running the dogs around the hills, but got too close to the edge of a drift and buried the quad. Any movement kept bringing it downhill further into the drift where it was about 2 ft deep. Lots of digging and rocking the quad for a good 40 minutes to get out of that debacle. I was really close to hoofing it a quarter mile to the house to get the tractor and a strap.

 

Just needed to come-along it to a tree....Oh, wait.

 

If only my winch line was a quarter mile longer!

 

I had a similar situation. An old lady got stuck at on the road at the bottom of my property Tuesday night. I took my little 4x4 Tacoma down to help and promptly got stuck. Had to leave it and walk up to the house to get the Ram to give her a ride home. The tire chains for the Tacoma are trapped in the barn attic so airing the tires to 8 psi and a good flog got it home the next morning. I wish we had another rubicon TJ. That thing is a beast in the snow.

 

Once I got my 1950 Willys pickup into "bottomless" soft snow. Hopelessly stuck. I poured water on the snow, waited a short time, then drove it out.

 

Well, we transitioned to above freezing today and some of the berms have gotten too big for the plow on the quad to deal with. I really want to get the big stuff cleaned out before it turns to slush and potentially re-freezes, making it impossible to deal with.

So it was time to drop the bucket:

I also cleaned as much snow off the driveway itself as I could to minimize the oncoming slush:


The tractor was definitely struggling for traction on the deep uphill sections, but it worked *just* well enough I didn't bother with the chains today.

I'm sure we could have survived without this work, but we spent a bunch of money on the front mount blower several years ago and didn't even get to use it last year. It made for a fun morning.

 

A front-mounted blower would rock! My neck gets sore from looking behind at the three-point unit on my tractor.

The hydraulic pump on the tractor won’t run a skid steer blower, so I’ve been dreaming of one with its own engine power, mounted in place of just the loader bucket. A project for another day…

We bought this one the same time we bought the tractor. This tractor has a front facing PTO under the drivers seat that powers the blower.

Other options are a front mount with a transfercase that hooks to the rear PTO: https://erskineattachments.com/products/front-mount-snowblower/

The hydraulic option is really expensive.

As you say, we got the front mount so my neck can survive all the upcoming winters.

 

Vehicle blowers are sooo bad arse, and definitely do a cleaner job.

this El Niño winter has basically destroyed the winter snow here. There is ZERO snow here. I’m super disappointed
