Next came the front axle. I was able to push the front axle forward about 6”! This gave me a new wheelbase of about 90”! I already had a shackle reversal on my jeep and liked the way it rode so I did the same thing with the new set up. I mounted my spring hangers off the front bumper. I don’t have any detailed pictures but I made a set of mock up spring hangers that allowed me to adjust the mounting height so I could dial in the ride height. I also made the shackle hangers an adjustable slider for the same reason. Once I had everything where I liked it, I tacked the shackle hangers in place and cut out new spring hangers for the front that had the dimensions I wanted. As soon as I had the jeep sitting on 4 wheels it was time to do some motivational flexing to admire all my hard work thus far

Right after flexing the jeep with the forklift, I pushed it back in the garage and immediately started tearing it apart again to finalize all the work I had done thus far. I fully welded all the suspension mounting points and even built a totally new bumper to replace the one that I built when I was 15 years old

Then it was time to install gears and lockers in the axles. I had one old style arb and one new style. The old one went in the rear axle and the new one went in the front.

After the gears were installed I went to work on the steering. I had the knuckles machined for high steer arms so I figured I would give them a try. I pushed my power steering box up as high and as far forward as I could. In order to do this I ended up needing to run my steering shaft through the front crossmember under the radiator, which I sleeved with a piece of tube. I also needed to push the steering box into the bumper about an inch.
This is what my steering links ended up looking like

Next was shocks and bump stops. There was a lot of forklift assisted articulation in the making of the shock and bump stop mounts

2022 King of the Hammers was my deadline to make my jeep drivable again. AND I just barely made it, with some help from some really good friends.
I didn’t get to really do any testing at home due to time so KOH was my Jeep’s first shake down run. Right off the bat I realized that I was going to need to redo my steering because I only had about 2” of up travel before the tie rod would hit the frame. BUT! I WAS DRIVING MY JEEP AND THATS ALL THAT I CARED! I had spent the last year doing all this work and I was now able to use it and have some fun! The steering worked fine while wheeling where the tires where flexing opposite each other, it only hit when driving where they would both come up at the same time

Going to KOH again had my head spinning with all kinds of ideas. Stay tuned to see what I’ve done since KOH and what I do in the future

ITLKSEZ, I am a welder by trade! I don’t weld for work anymore. Now I am a field engineer for a bridge contractor. But I welded in shops to get myself through college and even for a little bit after I graduated with my engineering degree

Since KOH I’ve addressed my steering problem by ditching the high steer arms and mounting the tie rod to the arms on the knuckles. The drag link is attached to the tie rod using a Ruffstuff Y link TRE. I also upgraded my ps pump to the Eddie motor sports pump suggested by metcalf and used his tc pump mount. It works awesome! Very nice design work on that mount!

I also took the leep into FUEL INJECTION! That’s right I got rid of that Holley 390 and installed a GM TBI unit. I have a buddy that made a stand-alone tbi set up for a sbc. He wasn’t using it any longer and said I should try it on my jeep. After doing some research I decided to do it. I took a lot of inspiration from NorCal69’s Howell write up and installed at cam sensor just like he did. You can even see the resemblance in the sensor mount I made. This last weekend we got the jeep started and did a little bit of tuning and HOLY COW MY JEEP HAS NEVER RAN BETTER!

Sweet Jeep and you have some serious skills! Nice to see Kyles simple trigger bolt method working for you too on the EFI!

I saw your video on Instagram from over the weekend. Looks like your TBI runs really well!
Did you end up getting the tune burned that I sent you?

Yeah it’s running good! We started with a stock 4.3 tune and went from there. I still have a bit more tuning to do so I have been referencing the tune you sent me. I’m trying to figure out tuner pro for myself so I’m little by little changing things. But! My jeep is running way better than it ever did with a carb! I really appreciate you posting everything you did

So I ditched the stiff BFG KR2 tires and mounted up some fresh BFG KM3s! They ride so much better than the KR2s did. I only had the KR2s because I got them for a great price but after wheeling with them a bit I realized that I needed softer tires

The KM3s are a little bit taller than the KR2s so I need to lower my bump stops a little bit but overall they seem to be great tires

    Great work , Man.
I have to correct just one little thing here ( For Future searcher's reference , only, btw. ).....
It's a ' Crank Sensor '....Cam sensor's are for Fuel Injector timing only.
    Sincerely,
    ' Cliff Clavin '

Just to be clear for future searchers

The sensor that I used is a cam shaft position sensor. It is Delphi part number SS11370-11B1. Although it is a factory cam shaft sensor that is used on many gm motors, in my application it is being used as a crank trigger. The sensor is simply a Hall effect sensor. When wired correctly into the wiring harness of a GM TBI, it replaces the tach input from the hei and gives the ecm a true tach signal that the ecm can read. Due to the “odd fire” of these motors the tach signal coming off the hei is hard for the ecm to process at rpms lower than 800.

    Just out of curiosity,
What do you have your target idle set at?
Did you remove any of the anti stall characteristics from the tune?

Gotcha.... I am just used to Learning & Tuning my Buick Even - Fire SFI .
I need to run both sensor's. It's a helluva Lot cheaper to do things of your design , IE :

I’m pretty sure target idle is at 600
We left the anti stall in the tune, it’s really nice to have while wheeling actually. I can just work the clutch and brake and the motor will just rev up ever so slightly if it’s about to die
