1971 Cj-6 (also Cj-5)...no Locking Hubs Up Front?

My 1971 CJ-6 (Dauntless V6/T14/D18) doesn't have locking front hubs, or at least there are aftermarket wheels/center caps on it, and I have yet to pull the front wheels. This is a low-mileage fire station Jeep (5,800 miles), so it hasn't been passed around through several owners.

Most of my Jeep knowledge is with later-model '80-up CJs.

Is it normal that the front wouldn't have selectable hubs for the 1971 model year?

    Thanks,
    Craig

    nickmil In mothballs.

Normal to not have locking hubs from the factory. They used bolt on drive flanges. When locking hubs became available in the aftermarket eventually they became an option.

What nickmil said. For 71, it was not a factory installed option. Was either a dealer installed option or 3rd party shop/owner installed. Same with quite a few other standard add ons that were not factory options at the time. For example, locking hubs, winch, soft top, rear tire carrier (exception is the renegade), radio and overdrive to name a few.

This is my new-to-me CJ-6. It has vintage Ramsey electric winch. Would the Ramsey have been a dealer option, or would the fire department have added this as an aftermarket item?

That's a beauty, dealer or outside shop fabricated bumper and winch mount...they may have not put locking hubs on for simplicity, with the kind of miles it would see in service fuel savings wouldn't matter much, nice score !

Thanks, dozerjim! Yeah, it has sat a lot, but has less than 5,800 actual miles. It now has a full soft top, as well (just installed this weekend).

That jeep is 51 years old. Ready to fall apart. I'll tell you what. I feel very generous because it's Christmas time and realize many folks could use a couple extra bucks. I'll give you $4000 for your jeep. I'm a retired Fireman and it would mean a great deal to me. Just kidding!!!

I appreciate your public service, and your generosity. :) I do wish I could upload a pic with the new top on, but I don't use any image hosting sites, and can only link an image here. It's looking pretty decent...much to do mechanically to get it dependable/reliable.

I'm not surprised if it has drive flanges. When lives are in danger the last thing you want to do is stop and lock the hubs. Also remember it was a fleet vehicle so more than one operator could leave the hubs in any sort of disarray.
