My m38a1 only came with one windshied to hood rest. Looking online they are shown to be two different brackets, particular to the left or right side of windshield frame.

Does anyone have any measurements to i can check what i have before ordering a repalcement?

Without running out to the shop to take measurements, I can describe them. They protrude further from the windshield on the outside to match the curvature of the hood, and they have notches on the top for extra clearance to get a top into the retention channel.

EDIT: This is wrong. The notches go down. See posts below.

For example, the bottom one in this picture is for the passenger side:

Thanks that helps. I thought the notches would be for the wipers to get more throw. good to know.

Just for laughs, I went and checked my all original one-owner '56. The OEM notches are down on the driver side, and up on the passenger side.

The retention channel does not appear to be a hard limiting factor, it never caused me a problem. The passenger wiper is hand operated.

Maybe I can look at my M38A1 later. And as side note, the retention channel on a military has a different curve than a civilian. Might negate that notch requirement in any case?

Mine were upside down on the '69 when I got it and you could get the bikini top in the slot but it was a pain. A previous owner must have forgot which was was up when they put foam on them. Now that they are the right way up it's *much* easier to get the top on.

Hate to rain on your parade, but I just checked. On my unmolested M38A1-C the notches are definitely both facing down.

Regarding tops, I've found it much the easiest if I lay them upside down on the hood while fitting them into the channel.

Aha. I may be wrong. They faced up on the '68 and didn't look like they had ever been removed. I know they had been removed in the past on the '69. For ease of top installation I'm going to leave mine upside down though.

After pulling up some vintage press images from Getty, I am indeed wrong. The notches are down in both of these images. Must be for wiper clearance?

1966 Dauntless. Hard to see bu the tops of the brackets are definitely flat:

You can see the notches better on this 1964 Tuxedo park:

    I learned something today, too.

And at least one of mine must be "wrong" from the factory.

You made me go look and mine I put the notch down. The attachment point works in to the offset. It does look like it would be easier to put the soft top or
bikini top on. My wipers are no where near hitting. I put my bikini top on once and it was a pain due to the brackets. My Supertop is still "new" in box. The bikini
top comes up short due to the double hoop design of my roll cage. It is about 9-1/2" short. I could not find the material to match, so I bought another. I will have the
two spliced together and have only one seam. Also, I would like to have about 3" taken off the back at the same time for better visibility. That said, I will flip my
standoffs as you said. It is not noticeable unless you know to look for it. My wipers park the other way. Not sure if I can change that or even care. I look through the
windshield, not at it. It doesn't bother me at all. Thanks. You are a good resource.

I used a spit 3/4" heater hose over these and some electrical tape to hold it on. Then fed heat shrink over that and did what heat shrink does.

This thread made me curious, so I went out and looked at the those things on my '69 and they are mounted notches down. My wipers are bottom mounted electric, so no interference issues.

I like vtx's idea on how to cover them!

I found my other rest for the Jeep. I guess falling off the table and hiding under things is a good way to get lost. Now I can mount that one also

on my 56 CJ the notches are facing upwards, and the soft top mount just barely clears them. I don't think they would clear if I flipped them to be notches down. Possibly different than the M38a1

Notches down on my '67 I've never messed with. Notches up on my '67 that I added new padding, and apparently reversed them.

From looking at factory original pics, I was able to have 2 questions answered. The direction of the hood rests, and the center windshield clasp finger direction.
(I decided not to wrap the hood rests with welting and used rubber bumpers)

What wiper motors are you using? I ask because yours park the opposite of mine. Possibly the vacuum motors.
