Jeep Won't Run

    I'll order another fuel pump. If that one doesn't work, I'll I'm switching to an electric unit.

    Still have the old one?
    Compare the length of the actuator arm, bet you're not even reaching the lobe to make the pump, pump.

    Are the rubber sections of the fuel line just slipped over straight-cut metal lines and clamped? If so, be aware that the clamps you are using are causing the rubber to "bunch" up and leave a gap through which air will be sucked in. These spots will not leak fuel out. Your choices are to go with all metal lines with mechanical connections or all rubber attached to barbed fittings and then clamped with full-circumference type clamps.

    i do not. tossed it. i live in the middle of nowhere, and dump days are the 1st and 3rd saturdays of the month. and i am gone most weekends, so when im home, everything thats junk goes to the dump. i thought of hopping the fence, and digging through the dumpster, but i am not that desperate yet. i even tossed the return box for the FLAPS pump. rockauto has a carter fuel pump on the way.

    the fittings on the pump that go to soft lines are barbed. where the brake lines are slid into the soft line, its a straight cut. this set up has worked for 15 years just fine. i did order a new gas tank that is supposed to be here by the end of the week. when its time to put that in, i will redo everything correctly.
    in the mean time i just want to get my jeep running. i did add more hose clamps as you suggested. i also replaced the short soft connections with new rubber line. it cannot hurt.

    I've read that some aftermarket fuel pumps have been assembled wrong , with the valve assembly installed backwards ????? Just somethin' I've learned . I think you will have better luck with the Carter ..... the OEM pump may have been an AC , though. I would get rid of the hose clamp / rubber crap & put a little bit of work into using a braided flex line with AN fittings . Then you will be sure that no air is getting in. Like Petel mentioned & reminded me........ also Fuel filters have to be changed at least once a year , running or not.

    Did you make your Dash Hole a bit larger to mount the ignition switch I sent You ? I realize that your busy , just haven't heard since you ran into that SNAFU ?

    There are no push rods in a f134, right?

    Yes, there are push rods in an F134, but only for the intake valves and not for the fuel pump which is what I assume you are asking. The actuator arm for the fuel pump rides directly on the camshaft lobe.

    There are at least two length actuator arms on the fuel pumps. It might be time to climb the fence and find your original pump to at minimum, then compare the arms. You might be able to transfer the guts from the new pump onto your old pump body if the arms are different. If I recall, some pump applications used a spacer where the pump bolt to the engine block.

    Looking at your photo in reply 35, is your arm bent where it comes out of the pump body? Looking at the arm, and the rivet, something looks out of line. If you didn’t compare the arms with your old pump, and your new pump wasn’t the correct one, that cam lobe that operates the pump has a LOT of mechanical leverage to bend/break things.

    i filled out the form, 4cyl 2.2L F-head 134 CID. thats what their PC said, and thats what i bought. best i can do.
    welcome to old jeeps, I guess. its a crap shoot these days, but we all know this already. its pretty much all Crown/Omix in someone elses packaging. hopefully the carter pump works.

    Couple of thoughts for the future... forgive me.

    - Try ordering from a dedicated Jeep specialist when possible.

    - Never throw out any old parts. They can be used for reference if nothing else.

    All the jeep specialists I tried for a non crown part were on backorder until no specific date.

    The fuel pump was a crown omix....didn't really think there would be an issue tossing it. If you don't learn something, you aren't doing it right.

    New gas tank arrived today. Of course i wasnt smart enough to order a new cap with it. Send unit should be here by friday, fuel pump too.

    Your fuel pump actuator arm needs to look like the one pictured and a spacer plate needs to be used for it to work. the new one was the third one I bought before I figured it out. I just thought the arms were different due to being a reman then I realized it wasn't even touching the cam 20230607_180742_compress79.jpg
