I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to do any paint or bodywork on my Commando....it's going to stay as-found faded green with an assortment of dings and dents. My question is, should I repaint the bumpers, or leave them beat up as well? I did repaint the wheels white, because they were scratched all to hell & covered with surface rust.

I'd personally leave them but I like my "patina Jeeps".

Pressure wash the remnants of bumper stickers off and call it a day. You may take some black sharpie to the bolt heads.

I need to fix up the interior....the Mrs has been enjoying getting out and riding in this thing, and I want it to be nice inside. The seats have been reupholstered but it needs carpet and a new dash pad.

I agree with Fino, paint all of it, or none of it. me, I don't get caught up in paint. I don't LOVE rust, but I like it better than worrying about scratching new paint.

When I drive my GF's vehicle or a friend's newer vehicle, I'm always worried about branches scratching them, or hitting the wheels against curbs or low vehicles hitting parking blocks, or whatever else. it makes me nervous to drive them. When I drive my vehicles that have old or original paint, I don't care. it's less stress. I do kinda like to drive by braille though, on and off road :D

That's where I'm at. A ratty outside is preferable as long as it's mostly straight and rust is only of the surface variety, but a ratty interior sucks. All the soft surfaces should be in good condition.

Leave the bumper sticker remnants too. Makes it look "lived in".

I would gently remove the bumper sticker remnants and then spray the bumper with WD-40. Wipe off excess WD-40 and be done with it. Hit the bumper with a spray and wipe of WD when you wash the Jeep and keep the rust from blooming red rust again. I agree don’t paint any of the bumper/bolts or paint it all.

If you just start with the spray of WD-40 eventually the stickers will probably come off.

IMHO: Fix up the interior so it is pleasant to drive and stock-ish looking, leave the exterior in as close to ‘as found’ condition as possible. Drive and enjoy!

Ok Doug the true question here is not to paint or not but what color? That is bringing up the question white or black? I’ll duck as I leave just asking for a friend :watch:

I'm not really a patina guy but in this case if you paint them they'll stand out like a sore thumb, I say leave them as is.

If you don’t paint them you only need to pressure wash them off once a year. If you paint them you will be out there hand washing every week

Fix the interior up how you like it
    Drive it
You and the Ms. can just enjoy cruising around

So, I scraped off the bumper sticker visible in the picture above, but I decided to leave this one. I think it's kinda cool!

I wouldn't paint them. Clean up the bumpers and wipe them down with Flood paint thinner. Some people use boiled linseed oil cut with mineral spirits but can take a long time to dry, sometimes it stays gooey for quite a while. The Flood has boiled linseed oil in it also with a mixture of solvents and seems to dry faster. The blo hardens to a thin polymer coat that will temporarily protect your current paint/rust, it will need to be reapplied occasionally. My other preference is clean it and some good quality car wax right over the surface rust stickers and everything.

I bought some of that to use on the blue '68. It looks, smells, and feels like Danish oil. It seems to work pretty good, but stinks to high hell for a week or so until it's fully dry.
