The Rear Axle Should Have A Grease Protector On Both Of The Hubs Correct?

Today I took apart the one side of the rear axle today that was really greasy and wet inside. Seems the hole was plugged up which would explain the grease and I'm guessing that wheel cylinder was leaking. Went over to the other side and there isn't a grease protector on that side at all but weirdly it isn't greasy at all in there. Just want to confirm that both sides should have this bad boy. https://www.kaiserwillys.com/produc...-46-71-jeep-willys-with-dana-41-44-53-640889/

Seems odd to not be there, would think anyone would notice it sitting there on reassembly. Thanks a bunch!

Yes they often rust out. and they dont do any good if they arnt sealed against the seal and backing plate. Also the problem i always have is the new seals they sell seal on the hub and not the axle like the old ones. So Iv had to make spacers to bring the seal out far enough for the seal to reach the hub and make a seal.

Thanks, I figured it should have one there. I don't see it having rusted though as everything else on the jeep is darn solid. I was planning on replacing the seals but after your issues I may hold off. They seem solid enough for getting it running and road worthy to see what is gonna need to be replaced after some miles get under her belt

Yup as long as the cup is there to catch it leaking thats a fine plan. Most of the axles also have a seal inside the tube before the bearing that is supposed to catch the gear oil so the outer seal is really just there to keep the water and dust from getting in to the bearing. I had one puke oil out for some reason so replaced the seal at that time.
