Knuckle Studs

I dunno. That doesn't seem outrageous to me. Til you buy the tooling, take the time to machine the knuckles and turn down the cap screws, buy the hardware.......plus a set of Spicer shafts if you already have a half dozen sets or more.......clean and paint everything.....or if you have to pay someone else to do the machining.......

I bought the tooling and was thinking of making these for people here but, if you guys think his price is that far out of whack, I'd better reconsider the venture.

Can I ask what you think would be a reasonable asking price or is that not cool?

 

Gotta say, having done it myself, that price doesn't seem out of line to me either. I'd probably bite, if I had a rig I needed it for.

 

It would be nice to buy them & just bolt them on. I bought the special bit from Mcmaster Carr, effed around figuring out how to clamp that thing in my drill press, bored 1 hole too deep & ruined a knuckle. Kind of a PITA.
Oh and I had to buy a whole box of the special button head bolts.

 

I don't think $2-300 is out if line.
the knuckles aren't cheap. You should be able to always run the disk studs.
but it really boils down to the knuckle casting thickness.
I had a machinist do the facing and that time is not cheap. The bolt heads I did on a lathe. I also have a extra set turned down...

 

They look a little short for a disk brake bracket. Easy enough to change. The price for knuckles, axles and spindles doesn't seem out of line.
If nothing else, they would be good for spares.

 

Consider a Dana 30 swap that already has that feature, along with disk brakes, tighter turning radius, more aftermarket support...

 

I agree, with knuckles, spindles, axles, and the stud upgrade that price is not out of line. In fact it is lower than I would sell a package like that.

As Joe said, knuckles aren't cheap, a set of good axles are not cheap either, the counterbore bit I use for prepping the inside of the casting isn't cheap, and neither are the special button head bolts.

I paid over $100 for the last 2 hole knuckle I bought, and felt I got a good deal. Chucking that many little bolts into a lathe to turn down the heads cost some time and effort, buying and using the counter bore bit to machine the inside face is more time, money, and effort, and buying the parts, all add up in time and money.

Guess I scrapped out about 1K worth then 3 months ago...10 knuckles.
Nobody wanted them.
My point was if your just doing knuckle studs, you can do it cheaper.
If your going down the rabbit hole, then maybe the price is right for you.

 

Dremel tool takes a while but works just fine.

 

Agree with this. I had buckets of knuckles. Can't give them away. I scrapped a bunch after going through them and saving what I thought were the best ones. The two holers are a different story. They are worth something.

 

Might be true about trying to sell the single hole knuckles, I don't know because I haven't bought or sold any of them, but it would be a mistake to scrap usable two hole passenger side knuckles. There are two hole driver side knuckles, wonder if they would bring a premium across the pond.

 

IDK, if guy was local, I'd go check them out and offer him $200. then we'd negotiate to $250 and they'd be in the back of my truck as I roll down the road. I wouldn't be willing to pay $300 + shipping.

 

I'm a little confused about the value in the knuckles, shafts, and spindles because anyone doing the stud conversion already has all these parts...I've done this conversion to two Jeeps. The machining cost me less than $50 at my local shop and a box of studs is not that expensive. Plus you only need to replace four of the six bolts with studs, which is less time and money...

Edit, I checked my notes and the machining was $100 - yikes...I guess I wanted to forget that.

 

Spare parts. Axles are not cheap and these are original?
