Looks like a good time for a transmission upgrade? At the least, maybe a T15?

Honestly I'd just run them. You might want to consider a sealed bearing for the output, they tend to keep the glittery stuff to wherever it came from.

I'd love to upgrade to a T18, but the goal at the moment is to get it back on the road.

That's what I was thinking it's just the reverse gear all forward gears are excellent.

    UPDATE:
I got the Jeep moving under its power today! Spent the last month doing the following:
    • Resurfaced flywheel
    • New starter ring gear
    • New clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing
    • Reassembled transmission with new bearings, sycros, gaskets and seals.
    • Reassembled transfercase with new bearings, gaskets and seals.
    • Reinstalled everything back into the jeep
I ended up reusing the slightly damaged reverse gears in the transmission, I couldn't find a good used or decent-looking new part. A little mixup with the front output shaft bearings on the transfer case, there was a change in the 73/74 timeframe that I was not aware of. All in all it was an enjoyable project it should be good drivline wise for the foreseeable future.

    Nice job!

Transmission rebuild in the kitchen implies no wife was involved.

No sink, unfinished concrete floor, pegboard under the cabinets, shotgun shell door pulls... the van's transmission is also in the same area. that's not his kitchen... that's a fine craftsman's workbench.
