    Hey Everyone,

Any recommendation on what product to use to lubricate the interior of the transfer case shifter control case ?
90w or bearing grease ? Manual doesn’t tell me!

    Thank you

J-pattern shifter? I’ve used a thin white grease from a squeeze tube. These shifters leave a lot to be desired. Many folks end up with an aftermarket twin-stick setup.

Thank you for your input. Thinking of using a silicone base grease.

If I'm not mistaken the cover for the box did have a gasket originally.
I suppose I would use a grease of some sort to stave off surface rust.
Gear oil would probably leak out like crazy.

If it does have the box as Jim indicated........I had a Wagoneer with the J shift pattern and the box. I shifted with much difficulty. Actually had to use my foot to get out of 4L. I crawled underneath, opened up that box ( 4 screws as I recall ) and found rusty mess. I cleaned and scraped and wire brushed as best I could followed by a liberal dowsing of brake cleaner. After that dried completely I sprayed white lithium grease all over the guts and worked the shifter several times. It worked flawlessly at that point. I gave it another shot of the lithium, wiped off the mounting surface for the cover plate and applied a little permatex gasket maker. Easy fix.

Thank you all! Mine had a gasket which of course was torn when I removed the cover. I made a new gasket and used a small amount of permatex to get a good seal. Mine was full of old axle grease which had harden over the years. I cleaned everything out and up! Thought maybe the torsion spring was bad but after clean up everything seems to be functioning properly. Finally opted for lithium complex ep grease . We will see if that was the right choice
