Hoist The Jib

This may not be jeep related enough for this forum but I will be using for jeep work so……mods move this if I’m out of line.

What happened to the 3B project some may ask. Well, I’ve decided I need to clear some projects off the plate before continuing with a new one. So I’m focusing on finishing a jib crane for the shop first. I’ll be happy when it’s upright and taking up much less space. Here it is.

6" x 6" x 1/4” wall box tube that once was a 30’ light pole. It’s now almost 11’ tall. I made sleeves for the 6 through bolts that hold the 1/2” thick C in place.

The hinge pin is 1.5" diameter and will ride in 2" O.D. 1/4" wall tubing. Don't mind the angle iron. I was a temporary spacer.

Pin cut to length.

I welded a large washer to the top of the pin the cut a flat spot on it. Then, I welded a stop on the top of the C to keep the pin from spinning. The sleeve that will be welded onto the horizontal I beam will be the moving part of the hinge. More on that later as I progress.

I then cut some more of that 1/2" steel that was left over from the C and made 2 gussets to support the underside of the C. The C started life as 10" x 10" box tell sourced from the scrap yard. I bought enough to make 2 of the C pieces in case I fubarred the first one. I'm still on the the first attempt.

Being pretty satisfied with the work on the post, I've turned my attention to the I beam that the trolley hoist will ride on. I needed to drill it to accept the 2" OD tubing for the pin to slide through. Took me a while to decide on a plan of action. Not wanting drill the holes by hand left me with utilizing my POS way worn out drill press. I hung the 10' long I beam from my engine hoist and then positioned it on the drill press. After leveling it in all directions I drilled the pilot hole on the one side and followed with progressively larger bits until I got to just shy of the hole saws 1/4" pilot bit.

Then I sunk the hole saw in. What a screeching wobbling horrible experience. The drill press is soooo shot. But I got it done. the 2" hole is oversized but thats okay I guess. I can take care of that when I weld the tube in place. Then I maneuvered the hoist and beam back onto the 3b chassis, sat it down, flipped it over, rigged it back up and and moved it back to the drill press to drill the other side. Here it is.

Next I will cut the web out of the area in between these two holes so I can place the tube where it needs to go followed by welding it in.

I was doing the text of the message and adding pics afterward. I'm simple like that.

I gave all my specs to my brother in law who had his engineer run the numbers. As I presented it then, he said a safe WLL of 1000 lbs. I've seen much stouter designs rated for the same weight and the ones I've seen rated at say 2000 are just monsters. I've added the gussets to my original design and will be adding a pivoting support from the beam to the post at a 45* angle so that should ease my mind as well. I think it's pretty stout as is bit I tend to overbuild things. And I doubt I'll ever hang 1000 lbs off this thing. 700 maybe. MAYBE.

Its first job is likely to be swinging that 350 into the B chassis.

 

One of my coworkers has a two post lift and jib with hoist able to swing a motor out of a vehicle. It all came with the house.

 

She’s standing on her own. Anchor bolts lined up great and my concrete was right on which eliminated the necessity for any shims.

Stood the post up with my engine hoist. Could have used an extra hand here but I got it.

I used my scaffolding to get the beam up to top of the post. I lifted it 1 rung at a time, back and forth, until I got to about the right height. Then I put a 2x8 under it and shimmed it up to the exact height to get it to slide into position so I could install the well greased pin. Here it is. It swings easily with no load on it. Hoping that continues when weight is on it. I'll start with something pretty light and work my up to test the unit after I get the trolley up there. It needs some mods to fit the beam.

And a bit of detail on the hinge/pivot area. I added a grease zerk so I can keep it moving smoothly.

Glad this thing is finally standing up and taking up less room. Hoping to get back to the 3B soon since this is finishing up. Might throw some paint on it someday if time allows. I'll keep an eye on any deflection in the post as I increase the load. If need be, I may add a diagonal support that will pivot with the beam. We shall see what happens.

 

Are you going to add a wall bracket near the top of the post?

 

If I find it necessary it is an option. We shall see. Engineer at my brother in laws work says it should take 1200 lbs as is and that is the x3 safety rating. Not sure I buy it do I’ll play with it and see how it goes. Thought about a tension brace on the back side of the post too if I get deflection.

The 3B Jules? Here it is. No progress to report.

And I have to finish this up before getting back to that. Gotta take it back apart and pack the bearings after an initial assembly to check its movement. It will be sold to help fund the B project.
