Driver Height Question

I am thinking of getting a mid 60s CJ and am 6’ 1”. Don’t have any CJs around my area to check and see how cramped it might be. When I was much younger I drove a CJ2A on a ranch for a few years so I have an idea of how tight they can be. Currently I am driving a 67 Jeepster which probably has more room than a CJ. I’m curious if I will have vision problems with the windshield height.

 

I'm 6'-0", and driving my '67 the with stock front seats (which sit an inch or two lower than the repro seats sold by Rugged Ridge, Smittybilt, etc), I don't have a problem as far as the view through the windshield, which is rectangular and flat on top. However, the upper portion of the windshield frame - and the top of the glass - are, for me, right at the point where if they were any lower, it would cause somewhat of an issue.

My brother in law is 6'-2", and his '67 has repro seats. He has commented that he wishes the top of the windshield glass were higher, as it tends to cut off his view.

If you're concerned about that in a CJ-5, you may want to consider looking for a '69-71. Those model years had the higher, arched windshield glass, as well as rear-mounted wipers.

 

I am 6'1" too, and I never noticed any problem seeing out of the windshield on my 67.

 

Height is only one issue. At 6’1” I’ve not had any issues with my ‘58. However, depth can also be an issue. Meaning the steering wheel can catch the shed if your shed is, how should I say, wealthy. Yes, wealthy will do. Hope I haven’t offended anyone.

 

You can notch the wheel well and gain more room for the seat to go back without too much work. I have seen it done. Good Luck.

 

Yet another problem easily solved by keeping the windshield flat on the hood, where it belongs.

6' tall here, I fit in the CJ just fine. Mine is a 70 so it does have the arched top windshield.
I have a Commando also, and I don't fit in it as well. The steering wheel is close to my lap & my knee hits the turn signal stalk when I use the clutch.

 

6’ here. I never thought the stock windshield was a visibility issue when I had stock seats, but I did swap the early frame to an early 70’s with the taller glass because I found one for free. The legs and pedal manipulation were the area that got cramped for me, but like others said, a wheel well notched helped.

 

I’ve sat in a Commando with half cab and I felt claustrophobic, where as in my CJ not bad I’m 6’3” but then I do have a tilt wheel which helps

Im 6'7" and it took some work for me to fit. Its comfortable enough that I've driven in halfway across the country and back.

 

I'm 6'-1" and have no issues with my 66 CJ5

 

My belly used to rub the steering wheel, then I noticed there were 1" spacers under the seat which I removed and that helped. I then added only the front spacers back under the seat to tilt the back a little, and then I lost some weight which helped even more. I now fit fairly comfortably in my CJ5, but still am a little tight in my CJ2A for which I plan to notch the wheel house and move the seat back.

 

I’m 6’ even and have never felt cramped or really had any issue with the early flat top glass. I do recommend keeping your seat as low as possible to the gas tank if you run the stock steering wheel.
I’ve had Jeepsters in the past and find their seat position very uncomfortable, especially operating the clutch or brake pedals.

6’-0” here and run a 3B windshield on my low hood. It is tight, and it works fine. More visibility than my TR6!
