I plan on putting a winch on my 67 CJ5. I’d like a Warn 8274 but they are out of my price range at $3200! I noticed that the 8274 is rated at 8 thousand pounds, but there are other options with higher ratings for considerably less money (from Warn). Why is the 8274 so venerated? What is it about this winch that makes it so desirable? Lastly, any recommendations beyond the 8274 for my little jeep?

it depends on your use plan, and what you really need.

read the specs say for the 8274

read the specs say for the m8000

i have used both on different rigs we have had. both have things i like.

    trade offs.

i have also one of each in the shed...

the m8000 has a few needs, motor for certain, but it has a low profile.

the 8274 is a project, will be upgrading when i get around to it. lots of threads on interwebs as to why.

A PTO winch will pull all day and all night forever. Turns a Jeep from a toy, into a tool.

The flip side of this statement is that your Jeep must be running for the winch to work.
An electric winch will still function if the battery is good.

It all depends on how you plan to use the winch...if it's just for recovery, an electric is probably the right choice.

    Here's a good 8274 FB group.
    https://www.facebook.com/share/g/2KN22SCMmdGXh3vG/
One of the main contributors John Breshears restores them for like $1000 plus parts. does a very nice job.

I see them on Marketplace locally every couple months. I'm sure other areas have them more often.

If you are solo an electric winch would have advantages to at least get out of harm's way or minimize loss with a disabled engine or other driveline component.
In a group a little cj with a pto winch and experienced operator can be positioned to pull the group past an obstacle without needing each and every vehicle to have a winch and all.

It's also a little tricky to use a remote with a pto winch.

My plans for the winch are solely recovery. One of those tools that when you need it—YOU NEED IT!

My old standby comment: How do you expect to use the Jeep?

Most of the time you will be pulling yourself or the guy in front of you off a rock. Pulling a log out of the way. Or making a quick pull up a steep section. Or making a creative trail repair. Extended, long, hard pulls are not that common unless you’re really pushing things hard, while going solo.

The nice thing about the electric upright winches (8274 & M8000 Bellview style) is that they fit between the frame rails on an early CJ…you can sink them nice and low. The newer style m8000 will have to be mounted above the bumper.

If regular, hard winching is possible, it’s worth thinking about an 8274 and electrical upgrades: Higher output alternator and wiring, dual batteries etc. The 8274 is strong, fast and keeps cool due to its duty cycle.

The vintage M8000, Warn Bellview can be found for a few hundred bucks. And it would be period correct for your little vintage build. I’ve used mine for everything listed above except a long, hard, drawn out, extended pull.

On a side note, my work trucks have X-Bull 13500-14500 winches on them. They work well for the tree work and rigging stuff I do for a living.

Please copy and post any you see for near that cost on the for sale section. I'm sure several folks would be interested.

Yes, but I'm not sharing the link. Those are serious winches for 8x8 truck trials and winch racing. Your looking at 1000 amps at 12v full power.

    Mine was $300
@oldtime has a ramsey upright dc9 for $350 or $400. It's just not a great fit with my saginaw steering box.

I have a PTO winch on my '68 cj5. I'm definitely a PTO winch novice. It's cool that the winch's speed can be controlled by shifting the transmission. The things I've used the winch for, such as pulling logs and repositioning an extracted tree stump, I've just operated the winch with the engine at idle. The winch has tremendous torque because of all the gearing and even at engine idle, the engine seems unaffected as if there's no additional load on the engine. The PTO winch scares me more than an electric winch. Suppose my foot doesn't jump to the clutch pedal fast enough or some other mechanical failure? Once moving, the PTO's default is to turn (and nothing is stopping it until the jeep runs out of gas), versus an electric winch where a button has to be pressed down for the winch to spool in or out. Also, when winding in the winch cable after a job, it takes two people (for this novice). My wife usually operates the clutch in the jeep while I'm out front applying tension on the spooling-in cable.

I agree. Seems a bit safer with an electric winch.

I have zero complaints with the one I chose. It’s worked as it should every time I’ve needed it.

That is my only complaint with a PTO winch. And , ... might be the reason I go back to a hydraulic winch.
With my electric winch, I killed several batteries. If the vehicle is not running, your lucky to get half of a single pull, ..... witch might get you out of the stream.
