Recommendations For Winch

Note in the description 8074, lacks the clutch mechanism on the motor shaft. Not a problem.
Looks like a good value. I'm not sure about the rope condition.

This has me thinking... the t18 allows the use of a pto off the side that trucks would often run a hydraulic pump. I'm guessing it would be too wide to fit in the frame rails, but I've never seen one in person. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Yeah it’s awsome that modern Warn fits down low in frame. What is the steering setup to sink it in there? That does not seem possible with the typical power Saginaw setup on a modified factory frame.

 

I'm a PTO fan, have them on 3 jeeps. Never an issue with solenoids, wires, remotes, motors, etc. And they will pull until the end of time, or you break something, whichever comes first. Yes, they are slow, but you can always shift. The one time it was a problem was being upside down, and self-righting was not an option, when alone. Oh, and they look great, with a low profile, but I had to take 1-1/2" out of the drum to fit with saggy PS.

 

It’s a reverse rotation Saginaw box. It’s a jigsaw puzzle in there.

I have this same one on my Wrangler...works great. It has a remote that proved VERY useful for one recovery.

 

Be careful with that remote. They discontinued them AFAIK. They were notorious for sticking in the “on” position when in the wireless mode, apparently due to internal corrosion. It happened to me once, and I’ve never used it cordless again.

 

Lots of amazing details in the design of that thing.

 

While I was in Search and Rescue and other pursuits I loved my Koenig pto winches. Now I’m switching over to Warn electric winches for ease of use, cleanliness under the Jeeps, and less maintenance.
Years ago I helped run the winch checkpoint in an off-road competitive event. The only winch at that time that came close to the pto winches was the Warn 8274. Can’t go wrong with one and can be found used. The price for a new one is just ridiculous.
I always considered a winch a very important tool in my toolbox and am willing to buy quality since I depend on my tools.

 

My thoughts also. The fact that you can still buy all the parts for an 8274 say a really lot. They are absolutely worth rebuilding. I probably ended up with close to $700 in my freebie 8274 but that included a 9.5 XP motor and a Zeon 12 solid state contactor located behind the grill. It made a really clean installation.

 

Just paid 10 bucks for one in really nice shape at the end of a weekend estate sale. Nobody wanted to pack it off all weekend. Belleview with shift lever intact and brake arm intact. Motor turns like new. I almost didn't make an offer on it as it was tagged at $50.

 

Yes, I even received a recall & replacement offer for that remote from WARN. I disassembled it and no corrosion, so I didn't pursue the replacement effort which included destroying the original remote.

The original 8274 is a 8000 lbs winch. For the 70th Anniversary Warn updated the winch to 10,000 lbs. The problem I see with a 8274 is weight. They are over 90 lbs without the winch plate and over 100lbs with. The Belleview isn't much lighter. If you're not a stickler for a period winch, I'd consider one of the UTV winches. Warn Axon 55 is pretty compact yet still 5500lbs which should be plenty for a stock-ish CJ5. The onyl downside is that the cable/rope is only 50 ft. You can supplement it with an extension line though. On the plus side, the shipping weight is 35 lbs with the synthetic rope. You could mount it upside down between the frame rails so no one would see it.

My M38A1 had a big Ramsey PTO on it at one time. No plans on putting one back on it. My YJ has a M8000 on it. Warn's planetary winches have a solid reputation. They have been around for almost as long as the 8274. Though only the old ones are made in the US. New winches are Assembled in the US, IIRC. I like relays solenoids over contactors though. All the modern electronics do break and then you're SOL. Relays can be swapped around not to mention are readily available at any Auto Parts store. I'll probably put a UTV winch on mine eventually. I'm running a 100a alternator and have a Optima 34M battery. I'd be hesitant to run a electric winch with a 45a alternator and a small 12v battery.

 

Thanks for the replies. Nice looking setups here! I went with a Warn M8S. I made a shorty bumper. Can that synthetic rope be used with a snatch block? Or single line only?
