Used to be, you could buy a kit to replace the silly Y shaped tie rod arrangement on an early CJ wiith a 1 piece tie rod. Does anyone still offer a kit like this or do you have to put together your own?

I bought a D30 tie rod and a right hand tap. Make sure you cut the end you can tap.

Looking back I would call speedway motors and jegs because at one time there was a cut to length note on the website.

Speedway Motors offers tie rods kits cut to specified length if you don't want to invest in a set of taps.

Check with advanced adapters, I think they have the parts you need to do it.

^ That’s the super easy way to do it. Then you bring it to my shop if you want it TIG welded. (y)

When I redid the wagon front end, I bought a new tie rod from speedway.....you can get it in like 2" increments and it comes already threaded to fit the tre thread you want.....easy peasy.....I bought the RH and LH locking nuts from them as well. My only concern might be that it's not the strongest beefiest option out there like buying dom and threading yourself? Dunno.... But I was thinking I'd rebuild the steering on the CJ with it as well. Depending on application, it might not come short enough for CJ width, especially if you use a double hole tre on the passenger side? .... sorry, on the road and don't have any links/parts numbers accessible.

I did mine a loooong time ago. I think I re-used one of the original rods for the bell crank to the new tre that has a hole for another tre. New long rod to go across.

Whelp, I now know that my steering linkage is an upgraded kit like that and not stock parts. Sometimes I forget how little I really know...

    This

I did the same. Intermediate tie rod and an 11/16-18 tap. Run the tap in full depth before you shorten it so you still have some threads left to center the tap for the final threading. That isn't a problem if you have a lathe but most don't and I did the first one of those before I had any machine tools.

probably easier to cut to length DOM and weld on some pre-machined L & R threaded ends. I've done that for control arms/links and steering for a few vehicles.

I got my first 1-piece tie rod from JC Whitney back in 1976.

Let me ask a dumb question. Why would you change the TR from original? Asking for a friend…lol

Mainly to prevent death wobble especially if you have a lift keeps the toe alignment from changing

To expand on what Jeep2003 said...with the stock setup, each tie rod is attached to the chassis at the bell crank near the middle. This results in the toe changing as the suspension moves up and down. Even at stock height this is less than ideal, with a lift it's a real problem. A 1 piece tie rod is a significant improvement even for a CJ with no lift and otherwise stock steering

Yep, I recall the two-piece setup causes "bump steer." Never experienced this, but I think the name is descriptive.
