What are peoples experiences like wheeling without PS?
My jeep will only be running 31x10.5s but I'm considering adding a front locker which I guess adds steering effort?

    Thanks in advance.

The locker will make the manual steering very hard. I did it for a while. I am so glad I got my PS working. But then again, you could look at it as a wokrout program. :D

Eh, it's not impossible or unbearable from what I felt driving Billy's Jeep at Tellico this spring. Takes some effort, then again he has the Ross box too. Saginaw should be easier.

Oh and Brad's old FarmJeep now Sandhill's has a locker and 31's. I didn't really notice it that much either.

I'm running a Tru-Trac in my 44 front end & it makes manual steering a bit harder.
My theory is that if you add a doo-dad that will make it easier to turn the wheel,
    1. It is something else to break
    2. It also makes any obstacles struck reflect back at the same easy rate.

First Rule of Construction Equipment & Off-Roading - Never wrap your thumbs around the steering wheel, keep them extended upwards along the wheel.

    gj

ps: keep the locker in the rear if the old original detroit locker, they make softer versions now

I was just reading in the latest issue of JP mag that there is now a company making a power steering conversion kit.. At least to replace the Ross box.. If you already have a saginaw in place it would be very easy to convert..

I've been wheeling without PS since day one, and let me tell you, it hurts! If a rock ever catches your tire and turns thems suddenly, your steering wheel will spin like crazy. If your arms are close enough when this happens, and more than likely they will be, you will get the worst indian burn you've ever had in your life! I've come home from weekend trips with my arms bleeding and burned. On the plus side, the scars are pretty cool though...

If you feel you need PS, then go for it. I have 4-wheelers (and 1 6-wheeler) both with and without, and I have to admit that I prefer "with". Without though, you can still do whatever the "withs" can do, and at the same time pump up your arm and chest muscles to impress the ladies. Just remember when rock-crawling: keep your fat foot off the clutch, and keep your thumbs out of the steering wheel!

It was an option in 74 as far as I know, so it could have it. I have no idea how popular of an option it was though.

Turns out it didn't have it. I had a lovely intro. to no PS on a 200 mile ride home from purchasing her. WOW, I think I might finally get my arms and chest in shape. LOL

I've wheeled without it in Speedy. I don't have a locker, but it never bothered me...
