What would cause my Jeep to only start once I let off of the key. I mean, I crank the engine over and until I let off the key it won't start. Once I do, fires right up.
    Wires crossed??????

It's not a problem, really, it just seems weird.

check the power wire for the coil.. It may be wired into the accessories side of the key switch. It needs to be on ignition side.

I would check to make sure your ignition and coil are wired correctly. When the engine is running normally, the current the to coil passes through a resistor (or resistance wiring). When you start the engine for the first time, however, this resistance is bypassed in order to generate a high enough voltage for the coil. If this was wired backwards, you would bypass the resistance when you let go of the key, which would explain why it starts. This also means that you are constantly bypassing the resistance in normal operation.

    Have you checked your timing?

Yeah, I have check the timing over and over again. IIRC this just started happening. Maybe it is the timing. I will check it again tonight.

    Thanks for the help

Ford electronic ignitions are notorious for this problem when the battery gets weak & there is not enough juice to power the ignition module until the starter is disengaged.
Check your wiring first, then do a load test on your battery & coil.

I have a new Optima Red top and a Chevy HEI coil. I don't think it's the battery. I could have wired something incorrectly or the timing could be off a bit. It runs and drives good, just starts funny. This happened a few years ago too, before the HEI and new battery. Maybe the timing is off.

    Thanks

Sounds to me like you forgot to hook up the wire going from the starter solenoid to the coil and that because everything is spinning and you let off the start position the coil gets some voltage from the run position and the engine starts. You know the wire I mean, the one that gives the coil the 12v shot to get the engine started.

Not so cumminicating good today. Sorry for confusion.
