The bell housing in my 67 v-6 is trashed.I long time ago got a replacement for it and planed to replace the unit.Since then I got a sm420 trans to swap out.The replacement bellhousing does not fit the sm420.The bellhousing in my jeep has a adapter from the housing to the trans, the trans say t89 on the side and t90 on the top. This bell housing looks as if it would fit the sm420.The replacement bellhousing looks to be longer and would not need the adapter.Where did i go wrong in my bellhousing search?

Sounds like you acquired a '71 bell with the molded-in adapter, a 1-piece unit designed to work with the T14.

From 66 through 70, the bell and the tranny adapter were 2 separate pieces, as was your original setup. I believe for the SM-420, you want a 66-70 bell, and you won't need the separate T14 adapter.

Standard BOP bellhousing should work for you.

Hey Ken, you're still around :D Wondering where you've been.

  7. Ken, I've got one you can have, but its been hacked. The ear pictured below has been cut off, but the price is right. :D

Yea still here, the only problem is I moved to a new house with a big garage, large workbench and room for jeep parts. Now my jeep is apart and it may stay that way unless I find a bellhousing!

Thanks Joel, but I think its the same as mine. Mine has been cut open on the bottom in about a 10x10 hole. Hard to tell from your picture is that the same thing. If so why are they cut?

  10. Mine just has the ear cut off to allow clearance for the master cylinder. I've since replaced it with a unit from Herm. It has a sheet metal cover cover for the bottom as well. I'll shoot a pic tonight if you want one.

It it possible that your original bell is a two piece unit that's missing a cover or was it just a PO hack job?

Joel, please send me a picture. The hole in the bottom of mine looks like it was done with a sawzall, real sloppy. Maybe there was a access hole that was enlarged? should it not be solid all the way around? I thought maybe p.o. damaged it and cut it out of the way of the flywheel, or opened it to tighten the flywheel/clutch?
