Personally - I'd drill and tap before I got close to it with a torch...

'Course, JB might be much better with a torch than I am. I'd just be scared of going too deep or flinching and making a nice 9/16" sized hole where the 3/8" stud use to be!!!!

Any hints on how to get the weld to fuse good to the old bolt when welding? I only have a mig welder. I'm doing a fantastic job filling the nuts up , but I can't get them to fuse well to whats left of the old bolt. I scrubbed down everything with lacquer thinner and a brass brush. I get a about a 1/4 turn with the wrench, then the nut pops off.

I'm with Tim on the drilling it out idea. I have a broken off exhaust stud on my F4 motor. When I do the rebuild, I'm going to drill it out to a size that's just smaller than the peaks of the threads, put some heat on it with the torch, then squirt in some Liquid Wrench to soak everything good. Should back right out then.

might need a larger nut (like 1/2") depends on how much is sticking up.

a torch will not cut cast Iron. I am assuming it isn't aluminum. I have removed lots of broken bolts from carb mounting studs to bell housing bolts with a torch. Try it and you will see the lite. It really is quite easy.

The restoration book I have recommends using a torch. I'm still hoping to get it out using the nut trick. We'll see tomorrow.

WOO HOO!!!, got the old bolt out by welding-on-a-nut method. :)

Got the carb on and fired it up, now it sounds like it's got a rod knock

This Jeep just doesn't seem like it wants to get resurected
