i know swamp buggies do that, what jeep is that a rock crawler?? double Trannies are pretty cool. I dont think it is that hard to mate them together, probably a coupler welded to the second tranny that goes on the fronts splines output. I bet it gets confusing though to shift and remember what you are doing.

It shouldnt be to complicated to shift. Just leave the second tranny in high gear if your going to be driving on the street and shift the first like you normally would, and if your offroad you can choose from the 1st gear ratio or the 2nd ratio. So its not like you would have to be shifting both of them while your going, but you could if you wanted I guess

    so those are both t90's?

what's the gear ratio for reverse?

reverse in the front and reverse in the back is a double low foward gear right...?

    that's wicked cool

And the length doesn't seem that long either. I like the fact that most of your crawl ratios are synchroed, so changing speeds on the fly is easy.

Reverse is 3.798:1, so reverse twice = forward at 14.425. And that's BEFORE the transfer case!
You'll shoot your eye out kid!

Hmmmm.....all I need now is a really hacked up Jeep.

How do you suppose he mated the output of #1 to the input of #2?

Why would having it in both reverses make it go forward :? If the output on the first one is spinning in reverse and then the second is going in reverse wouldnt ya go backwards at 14.425??? Or am I missing something...

It's a logic puzzle...like a double negative...or multipying two negative numbers together and netting a positive number.

FWIW I'd be concerned about the strength of relying on the reverse gears...doesn't seem like they'd have the same strength as using the forward gears...but that could be me still smarting from dropping the clutch in reverse and blowing up the tranny...;)

I was looking for more of a mechanicl reason as to why....but I'm pretty sure I figured it out.....Is it due to the fact the input in the tranny is spinning the opp. way than it would be normaly (from a engine) and then it reverses it back to a forward gear??

wow.... has this thread ever takin off eh? just a little update to my origanal idea. it prety much is a go except for a shaft. it seems i will have to get a custom one off shaft made to do this. the good news is my best bud is a machineist:) he is also in the works of building a new shop on his acrage with a machine shop in it. this should not be a problem to have this done. cool.
