Vacuum wiper motor lube?

    I don't have a manual yet. Anyone know what type of lubricant is used inside a wiper motor? Looks like a tan/brown grease. Also, does the motor normally leak vacuum when not in use? If not, what's the fix? If repair isn't an option, is there a good electric motor replacement for '62(bolt in?)

    I used regular chassis grease. Most advice I've heard says to never use anything like vaseline. You can see some cleaning tips and pics on my site at:

    No. And you'll need all the vacuum you can get!

    If the motor is in good shape usually just a good cleaning and relube will fix it. At least as far as one of those things can be fixed.

    Repair is always an option. However, I went through this and I can tell you that replacing with electric motors is ultimately the best way. You can use the cheapies found at a lot of places like JC Whitney, but I recommend marine (boating) wiper motors. Lots of old threads about them, but most of the bigger online boating places carry them. Be forewarned that they are pricey. But you get what you pay for too!

    I'll disassemble again and try the grease as suggested. Just curious - have you tried silicon grease - it slick and doesn't seem as sticky as chassis grease but I don't know how it reacts to old rubber.
    65CJ5 - great website with lots of info. What did you do for a new soft top - I'll be in the market for one soon. Do you have installation photo's and description?

    Silicon might work but I never tried it. A lighter grease might help the motor move better.

    The top is just a Bestop Supertop. Lots of 4WD places have them. No installation photos or anything on that I'm afraid.

    Since the vacuum motor is likely going away soon, I think I'll try the silicon grease. If it doesn't work :shock: I'll have an excuse to buy the electric motor :). I've seen at some of the Bestop tops in catalogs and online - sounds like the ticket!

    At idle, you should have 15-18". less than that and you have timing issues, or other engine related issues/problems. I think I read somewhere that the motors are tested at 22".
