hello all. my '71 CJ5 has a severe leak coming from the under driver's seat 10 gallon fuel tank. it seems to almost pour out of the top while driving. the leak seeps out of the top and drenches the carpet kit on the floor boards. I tried to do the cheap ghetto fix with J.B. Weld, but the gasoline turned the JB Weld into rubber that is deteriorating more and more each day. I cannot handle the fumes anymore and i know that nobody will weld this thing back up. im looking into a brand new tank install. can anyone shed some light onto this endeavor for me? any input would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance, Rick

i was checking out the JC Whitney website, and they sell an 11 gallon replacement tank. Is the stock tank 11 gallons? what other mags/websites carry these replacement tanks? thanks in advance, Rick

You can get some JB Weld type stuff specifically to fix gas tanks.

I'd replace it if it's that bad though.

You can find metal replacements and polyethelyne replacements as well online from Quadratec, Walcks, Turner4WD, etc.

For a quick fix while waiting for a new one put Bondo on it. I've seen it done and have done it myself. It does work. I used a lawnmower for years after putting bondo on the bottom of the gas tank.

You could try taking it to a radiator shop or two, I've ran across some that can/will repair leaky tanks. Since mine's been repaired before, I just went ahead and bought a new one from Walck's 4WD, cost me $95.00. It's an import, but it looks like it'll work just fine, and he has the best price.

Polysulfide is an RTV-like substance that will seal a leaky tank and is impervious to fuel. May not be easy to find, do a google search. Some marine places carry it.
But... better to replace the tank.
Strange that your '71 has an under-seat tank... must have been swapped in by a PO, because starting about mid-70, tanks went to the rear. I don't think any '71s had factory under-seat tanks.

Mine had been moved to the rear by the previous owner and looks to have the stock cut out in the body for the underseat tank. But I also have a redone squared off rear end so it may have been moved in that instance also.

Pull your tank out and find the hole, if its a "rub" hole, and the rest of the tank dos not look deteriorated, fill it with water and weld up the hole, put some new rubber padding under it and your good to go....Vic

Large hole(s), find a radiator shop and they should be able ot fix it. Small hole(s), I used some POR 15 I had left from the frame on my 5a (too cheap to spring for a real fix or a Poly tank). My tank was leaking at the bottom seam. Emptied the fuel and then coated the entire exterior of the tank . Used a couple of coats on the suspect areas. Its been a month or two and no issues yet. Eventually I will be getting a new poly tank though, probably in spring.

The tank in my FC had a leak. I soldered it with an old soldering iron and some 50/50 solder.
