I will have my new (old) engine in about a week & it is complete except for the carb. It has a manifold for a 4 barrel already on it. Motor is otherwise stock. I'm looking for recommendations on a carb for it. The engine is a Buick 231 odd-fire that I'll be putting in my 42 MB. The MB will be primarily (95%) for off-road use.

    Thanks.

i have an older 390 holly but i called holly and got the float and spring kit for the holly avenger 470 and they will swap over, so basically i have a 390 ruck avenger, but if you want new i would go with the new 470 in a heart beat

I've been looking into the Holley Truck Avenger 470 cfm as suggested. A little pricey, so if anyone else has one and likes it let me know. I don't mind spending the money, as long as I get what I pay for. Any issues with throttle linkage?

I would love to hear about the truck avenger too, but I'll probably never buy one. I had really bad luck with the Holley 390 off road. I had lowered the float level, whistle tubes, vent extenders and the sucker just couldn't handle off camber or washboard situations. I'm running a Motorcraft 2100 and like it. I know there are others here who like the Holley and are able to get them to work good - I couldn't get it to do what I use my Jeep for. The 2100 is awesome IMHO - no worries at any angle that I've been in.

The guys here that have them love them, now.
When they 1st came out they had some issues.
I've seen them run on some nasty off camber stuff that had other carbs sputter and or die.
If I ever find a 4 brl intake for mine I'll be running one.
Right now it has a 2G on it.

I'm running an offy duel port and a holley 390 cfm with center hung floats, some prep work from the old drag race days, some jet and powervalve tuning fuel pressure regulated down to 4.5psi and it takes the off roading just as good as the stock rochester 2 bbl. I'm very pleased with the performance. from past experience the holleys take a little more time to tune for the application
but once you get it right you've got it.

I've the 470 Truck Avenger on a Offy dp manifold in my 67 Jeepster. But can't tell you how it runs out yet, still doing the wiring. Got it new off ebay for under $400 delivered.

That would be the cheapest I've seen it. I'll look for it.

i have yet to have my 390 die yet, even when i slammed into the brick wall and almost flipped her she did not even sputter. i might have gotten lucky though. i think if i keep elenor and do the rebuild i will be buying the avenger. still thinking of putting the 4 sale sign on her though

Before I went to Megasquirt EFI, I ran the stock one barrel rochester with great results off road. Rubicon run at least six times, but you'd need to go with the intake and carb. Not sure why you'd want to do that though:rofl:
