I have a 58 cj5 with a Buick v6 in it. I was told that it is a 225 but am not for sure. How can I tell the difference between that and a 231? Also, how can I find out what year/model of vehicle this originally came out of? I'm having trouble getting the most simple of parts for this engine without this info. Our parts "pros" here in town aren't to willing (or able) to find any info if they can't just look it up in their book. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome!

Casting numbers will tell you what you have:

    As for the year and vehicle? If it's a 225 as you were told just tell 'em it's a CJ-5 w/ a 225 say a '71, that's usually late enough. I hafta buy parts for a '75 Skyhawk, '71 CJ-5, and '76 CJ-5 all in one vehicle. R)

I actually started keeping a notebook of part numbers and vehicle make/year for certain parts/components. Scary when you realize you can't remember stuff like you once did....

Also there are diffo's (I think) of the valve covers between the two. 225 V.C. are symmetrical as 231's have an odd slant/notch at one corner. Someone please correct this if it's wrong.
