I'm driving my '59 cj5 more regularly now that some bugs are worked out. I removed the soft top for full moon cruises and realized how loose the windshield frame is. The clamps aren't really doing anything, like they are mounted to far from the their catches. For the time being I stuck a small hex nut in there to hold it. Seems to be holding but could vibrate out. Is there another piece that I'm missing like a spacer or cushion that goes in between the 2? thanks.

Mine did/does the same thing. I kind of fixed it by placing a couple of hard rubber spacer things under the windshield frame. The other option, of which I sometimes choose is just fold the windshield down, put on my aviator helmet with goggles, tie the white scarf on and go where I want to go...

Nothing in between the two but I have seen some people use the Plati-Dip stuff on the hooks to cut down on noise. The hooks are adjustable. You should be able to loosen the bolts and slide them up and down as the dash is slotted where they bolt through. It's also possible that your windshield frame to cowl rubber gasket has compressed over time causing the latches to be loose. I'd take a look at both these scenarios. Nickmil.

Got it, I'll look at it at lunch. Didn't even consider the cowl seal but, judging by the rest of the Jeep, it's probably the problem. Thanks.

I need the goggles anyway with the air-born rust at speeds.

I had the same problem. I replaced the cowl seal under the frame and
    it solved the problem.

You could install some later model windshield clamps that are much more adjustable. In fact are the original toolbox lock style clamps even adjustable? I've never actually looked at them up close. I had cast aluminum Advance Adapter Brackets on mine but I can't seem to find them for sale any more...I know there there,...just can't find them.

    Look at this thread....http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8310

I used a piece of thick-wall heater hose between the latch and catch. Worked great. Just have to remember to keep track of them when the windshield is down.

Another question. The windshield header has a hook that graps a koop on the hood when up. Aft of this loop is a pair of screws where it looks like another loop used to be. I was thinking this loop would be for the windshield when folded down but they don't line up. Are these holes for something else?...and is the windshield supposed to latch in the down position?

The w/s isn't supposed to latch, there was a centered footman loop on the w/s frame that had a canvas strap attached. When the w/s is down, resting on the hood, this strap goes through another footman loop on the hood to secure the w/s down.
