Has any one every built or used a waste oil heater I have about 100 gallons of used engine oil I need to do something with. Thought I might check this out before I take it to a recycling station.

This heater is very interesting.....wish I lived in a place where I could build and use something like that. Don't have the space for it in my little garage.

Just wondered if anybody has one or have seen one that works. I have seen the one at Journey and also was inspired to make a little biodiesel but only 5 liters.

I have 3 different friends who are always after my waste engine oil. I produce about 300 gallons a year of it. The heaters work good, some brands are better then others though. I don't recall offhand which are the best though. I do know that they have improved them much over the past few years. Their biggest problem that I have seen is that they sometimes carbon up, usually a good cleaning once a year will remedy that problem. I have also seen a couple that developed a couple cracked flues over several years time. The remedy for that was to simply weld in some new regular steel tubing that is easily obtained and not that difficult to replace. One other drawback was that sometimes in extreme cold, if the storage tank was outside the oil could congeal a bit, making it hard for the furnace's pump to draw the needed oil. One friend devised a simple remedy for this problem also. He used it to heat a 60 x 80 ft. airplane hanger. He had a 1000 gallon storage tank outside. To that he plumbed a 1 1/4 in diam pipe (with shutoff valve) through the wall into a 75 gallon tank that was in the shop. Gravity fed the tank in the shop, then to oil could warm up some so the furnace pump never had to overwork with cold, thick oil. His furnace works great and he never has to use his backup heat. He is very pleased with the setup. Cam

This is the same set up we use simple gravity feed, with a valve for adjustment about 5 feet of 1 1/4 pipe, oil resivoir is outside, stove heats pipe, oil gets thin, and to turbo charge it, just add an air hose fitting into the side of the stove to allow you to plug in your air hose, we found that 2lbs of air pressure through the regulator/compressor makes a huge difference in heat output, we use either a cutting torch or propane to fire the thing...free heat, total build cost? nothing............Vic

i worked in an old shop back in the day. my friend and i did car repair and the owner did transmission repair. we used the old oil and trans fliud to heat the shop. the heater was nothing more than the old 275 gallon oil heater tank with a round metal chimeny pipe at one end for the exhaust. and a 1/4 " soft copper pipe at the other end. on the wall was hung a 5 gallon bucket filled with the old oil. there was a small petcock on the bucket to control the flow. gravity feed the oil from the bucket down the copper pie and the oil dripped into the bottom of the tank. talk about cheap heat. one day it got so hot that it melted the paint of a customers car. ouch!
