I just finished painting a front bumper with some satin black rattle can paint (X-O Rust) from True Value Hardware and the finish is very close to what I remember the CJ frames to be in the late 60s. The black is not glossy or too flat.

I use Chassis Black from the local auto paint wholesaler. $22/gal, ready-to-spray. I transfer about a half pint at a time to a small sealable can. I brush it on anything that needs to be black. Dries quick, easy touch up, pretty tough, doesn't fade much. I'm about 2 pints into my second gallon in 10 yrs, which included painting a frame, numerous bumpers, a roll cage, and dozens of small items :)

I'd call it a satin finish... maybe a bit shiny, definitely neither flat nor gloss...
There are some pics in this thread.

The angle stock under the latch was painted about an hour before the pic with chassis black. The roll bar was painted in '96 or so, the ubolt/muffler clamp that holds my seat belt retractor to the roll bar was painted with the same stuff last year.
Any other pics of my front or rear bumper you may have seen, or the roll cage, is the same stuff.
I know Eastwood has a Chassis black, probably the same stuff. I think mine was made by Tec Star or some such, I can't find anything on the net, ; I prolly don't recall the brand name correctly...

OK, I called the place where I got it :)
    the place is called BAPS
    1-800-862-BAPS
You can call them for more details, UV resistance, etc.
The paint is a PPG type, ALK-200, it's a special formula that they custom mix. Cost is $21.84 per gallon, shippable by UPS.
They'd be happy to ship a gallon to you ;) :D
Not sure what the shipping charges would be...
Hope this gives you enough info to continue your search Steve.
    Good Luck!!

    Hi,

I saw this discussion a whlie back on one of the other forums around, 2A maybe, Anyway, it was sugjested to use the black from a Case tractor dealer. Supposed to be really tough and the right shade.

I used the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator as a primer and Eastwood Chassis Black for top coat. Expensive, but worth it.

I thought somebody here (Boyink?) has a trailer whose frame was painted with Eastwood Chassis Black, and it's turned chalky on the tongue where it's exposed to the sun? Is I mistooken?

Half right. The paint that's oxidizing is the POR chassis black though.

X3. That Chassis Black is a really hard epoxy paint. I thought the "80% goss" was just right.
