Every day I learn something. I discovered this when looking at an old '50's CJ6 today in a junk yard.

In the 1965 and prior jeeps the battery tray was mounted to the frame.

The way the battery trays were made at the factory was that on the left side of the battery unit there is an about 2 inch diameter hole. This would be the vertical piece that goes from the tray top to the frame.

Also if you look at the top of the tray you will see that part of the tray top has a notch in it - about a 1.5 inch arc on the bottom left of the tray..

So - what is that for??? Hint- the purpose of both items is related.

    Take a guess.

I'll post the solution tomorrow, but I imagine someone will guess what those two oddities are for.

I had never seen this used before, but it makes perfect sense...

The picture posted is exactly correct. I didn't have a picture of it, so I did my best to describe it.

It is for the steering drag link for a RHD jeep.

On the RHD jeep the pittman arm goes almost straight up -- the drag link runs through the battery tray and connects to the bellcrank mounted on the frame at the front end of the battery tray.

I'd imagine that the hole was not round, but oblong to allow for the drag link movement sideways as it went forward and back.

It looked really wierd, but it was factory on this old late '50's cj6 that I found in the junkyard.

I never would have thought that Jeep would have built it that way, but that is the way they did it.

Actually there were two cj6's there. A cj6A (s/n 10450) and this other RHD jeep (s/n 24542). the older one (24542) was in better shape than the 67 tuxedo park.

The 6A is pretty far gone, but the other one is better; it still has the F-134 and the trans. Both have hard tops on them, and actually you could build a fairly decent hard top with one from a CJ6 and some doors that he has laying around in trailers.

If anyone is interested in one or both, send me an e-mail and I'll put you in touch with the owner.

I think that he will be sending these to the crusher in the spring.

He has crushed most of his CJ and FC stuff, but he has a ton of HUMVEE parts. I think you could make one with the parts he has.

The parts are located in a junkyard in Indiana not too far from Chicago.

Yes, it sure would be -- Chuck Dadlow.

Unfortunately you wouldn't recognize his yard if you havent been there lately.

He has sent so much stuff to the crusher that is is sad....
