I just ordered some new wiper arms and a new thermostat from 4wd.com. I'm wondering what temp. do you guys run. Right now I think my thermostat is going bad because it runs very low on the Temp gauge. I ordered a 180* stat. Is that going to work???
    Thanks

You might consider drilling a 1/8" hole in the thermostat, on the metal flange. Fit it into place, and mark a point at the top, at a point on the brass that isn't part of the housing contact area. This allows any trapped air bubble to pass before the tstat opens, and allows the tstat to work correctly.

In some conditions, a bubble forms, gets trapped because the tstat is closed, and the air in the bubble doesn't transfer the heat efficiently, so the tstat doesn't open on time, and you get overheating...

Anyone have a real pic of this???
I'm sure it's pretty simple, but I need a better visual.

    Thanks

    Don't have a real pic...
The graphic above represents views of the tstat top/side/bottom. The view of the top shows by the pink dot where to drill the 1/8" hole in the brass disc.

The intermediates were equipped with a quite high temperature t-stat when new. I think the book called for a 205 degree. My 73 still had one in it when I got it. I replaced it with a 195 for the winter (for heater performance) and will use a 180/185 or so for the summer. The 205 was, in am thinking for emmisions and not much use for anything else. If your state requires your vehicle to be smog checked, you may want to run a hot t-stat for the check and then after you pass, replace it with a cooler one.

Nope, no emissions test here. Good thing as I have no emissions equipment left. Hasn't had any since before I bought it. I know I'm probably destroying the enviornment, but here in Iowa smog isn't a big issue.
The reason I think I need a new stat is the temp gauge keeps reading lower and lower. I changed out the sending unit last summer so I don't think that is the problem. Anyways thanks for the replys. I plan on gettin this done this weekend along with puttin different wiper arms on.

    Thanks again,
