According to the service manual the oil pump needs to be installed so the wide part of the distributor is nearest the top of the engine with the slot in the 11 o'clock position. This seems to have the distributor 180 degrees off as then the rotot points not to number one cylinder but to number 4. Is the manual wrong or I am I reading something wrong? Thanks.

I wouldn't be at all concerned about the position of the oil pump Ed, the position of the distributor is what matters if you ever want to use a timing light to time the engine. I know I had my oil pump off a coupla times to get it lined up correctly, but it was well worth it.

Also, you DID pack the oil pump with vaseline, or submerge it in a quart of oil before you installed it, right? If you go the oil route, spin the shaft by hand a coupla turns each way while it is submerged and this ensures that the pump is primed. If you don't have something in there when you first fire it up, the pump will have no prime and it won't produce any oil pressure. That's a bad thing. ;)

The manual method works fine - I've used it every time.

The rotor doesn't point to any cylinder, it simply points to a contact on the distributor cap. The one it points to when #1 is at TDC with the valves closed and the distributor has been installed should be connected to the #1 cylinder.

Counter clockwise it oughta be 1-3-4-2. Usually #1 will end up in the 4 o'clock position, but if it doesn't, there is no reason to care as long as the wires have been connected to the correct cylinder in the correct order.

I don't have the manual in front of me now, but it needs to start in the 11 o'clock position and move to the 9:30 position as the gear is meshed with the camshaft (IIRC). Whether the larger "half" starts up or down, I don't remember, but it has worked per the manual for me.

    good luck

Thanks guys. I realize that the rotor contact needs to point to a contact (preferably the contact dentoted for number one in the manual but not essential) in the cap with nunber 1 cylinder at TDC. I used a dial indicator on the piston to get it there (the head is still off). It just seemed a bit odd that the service manual installation method seems to put the rotor pointing at number 4 cylinder contact on the distributor cap instead of nuber 1. I can time it with no problem no matter what contact I use, it just seemed strange that's all. I will make sure I prime the oil pump prior to final installation. Thanks again, always a big help.
