I am redoing my brakes for a 76 d30 swap. Can I use the 7/8 brake rotor instead of the origional 1 1/8. That I am taking off without modifications? Thanks

    No.
It may work for awhile but as the pads wear you will overextend the caliper piston and possibly come out of the bore. I've never measured them but there may be a diameter difference in the rotor as well. The thicker ones cool better and are more heavy duty so there is no good reason to go to the thinner ones other than cost. This is not a time to be tight on the purse strings. Nickmil.

Good advice. The reason I asked is because I found a set of drilled and slotted rotors I liked. They only carry them in 7/8. It was not the money issue.
