Hello folks, I never knew this forum or website existed until tonight. Anyway I just started to restore my 55cj my grandfather left to me and while I've been buying parts lately I have been trying to do my homework on it. The jeep has been in the family since it was bought new and only was used at the deer and duck camp and then parked. It only has 2850 miles on it. The body is in good shape exept the floor pans. As i was looking under the dash I noticed a small metal box positioned behind the glove door. It has a small flip up lid with a propeller on the inside. It also has 2 wires dangling from the top on the outside. Is this a heater and ifso where does it hookup at on the dash? Also where can I find a original dash layout sinnce there are small holes in it but no controls. Your help is appreciated. Thanks

    Hey-ya Bayou!

I've been told that I have the good fortune to have an unmolested dash....

The hole near the left hand side is for the vacuum line up to the wipers.
There are 4 holes surrounding the speedo, clockwise from bottom left is choke, throttle, lights, and ignition switch. If you look closely in the picture, there is another pair of holes; one near the light switch, and one over the glove box. This is for the grab bar.

    Hope this helps.

Oh yea, This group is a bit pic hungry, so I would suggest you figger out how to post them. You will be hounded until you do!!! :D

Some of the old heaters used a control that clamped on the lower lip of the dash. Look for wire coming out of the heater and attach (temporary) a fused 12v source to see if your blower turns, probably will not after all these years. Wiring diagrams are avail off the home page in the tech section. Oh yeah Welcome from GA.

I will try to post pictures in the future(no immediate digital camera)but the box I am trying to describe is about a little bit bigger than a old metal lunch box located on the passenger side . when you open the glove door you can see it up by the firewall. It has a flip up lid about 2" tall and about 10" long with a propeller on the inside.

Here's what mine looks like. The switch, half hidden behind the transmission stick, is attached to the bottom lip of the dash as mentioned before. Hope this helps.
