Newbie Flattie owner Better pics page 2

My buddy didn't tell me he finally decided to sell... I had to see it on Great lakes 4x4 classifieds. My buddy has a scrap man that picks all the scrap from his shop up, one day he rolls up with his flatbed and this 46 2A on the back, asks my buddy if he wants it, it was too good to chop up, My buddy took it and for about the last 8 months has been sitting in his yard, then i saw it for sale today... sorry these are off my buddies camera phone.

I need to find a drivetrain though...
Needs fenders, engine, tranny and t-case to move, inner windshield frame, seat covers and guages to make it look better

Not planning a full restore for it until i get a garage, which unless i sell my cars will be a ways off... Hell I dont know how I will keep 2 jeeps running

    Placed the deposit last night
Now I HAVE to sell my 2 extra cars :miff: My yard isnt big enough

What are some common combos for drivetrain... As much as I hate foreign stuff I thought about a geo tracker or samurai driveline....

Welcome aboard from Virginia Beach. nice looking project. I would go with a :v6:/SM420 or go back to the stock flathead myself, but a modern small fuel injected powertrain might be interesting

Have a YJ with a mild build 355, it eats enough gas and breaks enough stuff for 2 jeeps R) well about 16-18 hwy anyway, 6 city.

Thats my toy, I want this more just for riding around and the cool factor of a flattie. Thats why i was thinking modern 4cyl FI powertrain, then I could afford drive it all the time and parts would be more plentiful.

Then later down the road frame off it, but keep the modern powertrain.

Pinto 4 cylinder or AMC FI 2.5 L get my vote before the Suzuki engine.

Yep stock engine, tranny, and t-case are all MIA as well as the Stock Guages (has a buick guage cluster from the 70's) the top and doors are gone, but the soft top bows are there, the headlight trim is gone, the inner windshield frame is also gone

Dont know of many Pinto motors around here fairly inexpensive, as much as I hate to I am leaning toward the Geo or sami motor because I have access to one very cheap, the rebuild kit is under 80 bux, and they are FI. If I went the Sami route i would have a divorced t-case, yet still be shorter then the stock driveline with an available 5:1 kit. Problem is finding the sami t-case, If I went the Geo tracker route the motor would last forever as well as you can pick up a rotted away one for around 2-500 bux that runs and is complete.

Jeep FI 4 bangers are sheep. Adaptors are easy to come by for an SM420. You could have a heckuva rig with that setup. AMC2.5 > Chevy S10 Bellhousing > SM420 > Adaptor > D18.

Course if the others are cheap too... :D

When I went to buy it i was thinking Jeep 2.5 FI, Ax-5 (i know they arent great but it wont be a Heavy wheeler) 231 combo... very cheap setup, but i forgot the Cj was passenger drop. now I have to forget everything I have learned about My other jeep and do different with this rig.

Isnt the SM420 the tranny with the granny low gear, and only a 4 speed? I know the D18 is a good t-case and the SM420 is a good wheeling tranny, but this Jeep would be seeing very few trails, its hard enough doing the maintenance on my regular trail rig.

Just a suggestion, since this is not going to be you’re off road rig. How about just preserving the classic looks and make it a two-wheel drive road rig. I run a Chevy II inline 4 motor in my 2A, and it fits great, has plenty of power and Chevy parts are easy to get. Also, you can use any GM transmission behind it. Besides, putting Japanese parts in a classic Jeep just doesn’t sit well.

Ford flathead v8. Not too much power but somewhat period-correct and cool. I saw a motorcycle with one of these once.

Converting a 4wd jeep to 2wd doesnt sit well with me. Besides, I am sure I will want to play at some point.

Just exploring options and plan to go the best route for the short length of jeep. Jap junk doesnt sit well with me either... but right now it looks like a really good option... and if i buy a tracker i can "claim" it as chevy R)

It appears to have potential! Welcome flattie owner!

Easy solution is to toss in the stock drivetrain. We have a few in this area.

Jerry has a stock L-134 here in Clarkston sitting in his garage. Sweet talk him and he will part with it scheep. We drove it until it developed a mild rod knock and pulled it. I know of another L-134 with trans and T-case in a complete flattie in a junk yard near Durand. Rusted to pieces and not savable but the engine was clean. Yard owner said it ran "great at one time". Trans and T-case are still attached, unknown condition (likely rusted).

Running a stock flat head is pretty cool because most people can't believe its still in there! 62 HP will climb trees if you let it! 8)

Please dont tell me it was Dads 4x4... Durand is near my house now and I grew up and was schooled there, they crushed all the cars at Dads 4x4 2 months ago and hauled them away, I would go stock if I could find one, I figured they would cost an arm and a leg.

Stock flathead would be cool. If I had another I'd do that.

No, not Dad's... Phil's southwest of Durand in Byron I think (?). I haven't been there for about a year. We pulled a 71 CJ5 out of there a couple years ago.

THe one we have here in town would work for you. PM me if interested, I will ask Jerry. It has almost everything on it!
