I have a F-134 engine that I want to get rebuilt eventually. I would like an estimate for how much this would cost if I had someone do it for me.

I've been quoted $2000 locally, but that was sight unseen over the phone. There's complete overhaul kits out there for $450-$500 range. Then you have the machine shop charges for tanking, boring, valve grinding, crank turning, etc., and whatever tools you have to buy that you don't have...like a torque wrench, engine stand, etc. Kind of a crap shoot which way to go, but I like to do that stuff so I'll do it myself. I also have three spare motors to rob parts off of.

That's about what I ended up paying....

Hot tank, clean up the bores, new pistons, new timing chain, valve job, new valves, etc. I probably could have done the assembly myself, but I hadn't done it before, and I was doing so well with the project that I didn't want to jinx it.

My L-134 in the m38 cost me around 900 to rebuild. That included new valves seat, valves, spring, boring, new valve guides, and all the gaskets, pistons, rings, bearings, and oil pump

A "basic" rebuild often runs about $200 per cylinder, assuming that no major internal components need to be replaced and that you do the teardown & reassembly yourself. With early Jeeps that cost almost never happens, since Jeep owners tend to run them until they either stop running, wear them out, or they park them and let them seize up from rust.

IMHO the $1700-$2000 figure is probably pretty decent for a shop to do all the work and have a a brand-new engine waiting for you on the loading dock.
