Has anyone ever seen this type of dual tank set up before? Was this ever a stock configuration?

Never stock but many people have done it. I am a little saddened to see an mb/gpw cut up that way.

as Bill mentioned, popular modification to make
mine has 2 tanks like pictured
negative is you lose the under seat tool box and it's storage
positive is you gain 10 gals, might not have to carry gas cans

It's not mine. I was just wondering about it. It would be nice not to have to carry a spare gas can, but like you said Jim, then you need to find another place for tools, etc.

Bill, you don't want to see my MB then ..... I notched the wheel wheels to gain some leg room.

You've seen a set up like that on an M38 Mike. ;)

MTS sells passenger side configured poly tanks, and you can buy the filler cut out about anywhere (i.e. 4wd HW). I imagine other places sell steel passenger side configured tanks.
