Hi, this sounds like a great idea to me. I am in a similar situation. My wife has a '46 cj2a that we want to use more on the trail, but the stock 2.9 first in the t-90, and stock gears are just too fast. I also have a front and rear pto and a warn OD and a freshly restored L-head with the governor and the works, so there is no way I want to change a lot of the older stuff on it. I also want to put in a 4 speed, at some time in the future, but I still cringe at the idea of cutting up the body and messing with everything to keep the pto's still correct.

So, for now, I am redoing the stock t-90 with gears from the t-90c to get the 3.34 1st, and I'll retain the stock 5.38s in the axles, but want to run either a 3.14 tera kit or a 3.8 rock eater kit and keep the warn OD. It's not as low as putting a 4 speed in, (I was thinking of using a jeep t-98 out of an f-head CJ that I have here), but it sure would be nice to keep the stock rear driveshaft length and keep everything else working pto wise.

Looks to me like the jeep t-98s and modified t-18s are the shortest swaps that can be made in the older cjs. Someone once told me that the SM420s can be made to be adapted in to be even shorter that the t-98 or t-18, but I have not seen any t-case adapters for them less than 4 or 5 inches long. Any ideas on better 4 speed swaps, or opinions on the spicer 18 low gear kits would be appreciated!

Thanks for the thread! I noted that the Novak website and other people are saying that the t-90c gear swap gets you 3.44 gears in first, but by my calculations by counting gear teeth it is 3.34:1. The factory manual I have confirms this as well. Or is there a third set of gears out there for the t90s?

The Rock eater gear kits are available through O'Brians 4 Wheels West. Jack O'Brian is a nice guy who seems pretty honest and knowledgable. His gears are pricey, but if you read the reasons why, it makes sense, they are top quality gears that should outlast your jeep! There are 4 ratios available for the model 18 transfer cases, the 3.08 and 3.8 (or maybe it was a 3.6 set?,I am going by memory) sets work with or without an overdrive, and there are also 4.1 or 4.86 kits available if you don't run an overdrive.
