looking at a flatfender tonight. questions...

    i am a late model cj guy, i have a line on a flatfender 46-7-8 not sure yet of year. anyway i know that the serial numbers were in 3 spots, the dash, the passenger side firewall and on the passenger frame rail near the front. can anyone confirm this? i would like to see if this baby is original or not.

    it has:

    f-head (hole cut in hood)
    rest of the drivetrain is stock.
    lots of replacement sheet metal to repair body (pretty rough)
    jeep ran and drove 3 years ago, now the body is removed.
    owner has 2 windshield frames,
    2 hoods, 2 grills.
    a couple small NOS items.
    fenders are straight
    4 sets of seat frames
    1 set late model jeep seats
    tow bar
    rool bar.
    all tires hold air.
    CLEAR TITLE.

    i am going to grab some pics while i am there.. i always loved the old flattys.


    i know the frame is prone to damage on theses old rigs, i know to check the spring hanger areas for cracks..

    anything other than rust to look for?

    Hole in hood would indicate non original engine - fhead vs lhead. Never seen a VIN on the dash or on the frame (I know it's supposed to be on the frame, but in the 20 + I have worked on over the years, I have never seen one). I have never heard they are on the dash either.

    Pics would help - easy to spot a 2A even without the split windshield by the way the tranny Xmember mounts to the frame. Get the model numbers on the axles and tranny, pic the engine.

    I have seen them on the frame horn before but most times there is a patch welded over it for frame repairs. The column shift (45-mid 46) up to 38022 or abouts has the vin on the passenger side dash.

    I wonder if this is the same 2A that a guy was asking about here a couple months ago. The one that started at $1000 but went to $1500 when he went to look at it? Had all the parts in boxes. That was here in the Denver area, I believe.

    "The serial numbers are located on the frame horn behind the front bumper. The first 100 or so were on the inside of the frame horn like the MB’s. Afterward the tag was mounted on the outside frame horn. At some point (after the VEC and VE series) the tag was moved to the firewall beside the air filter. There was also a body number. This number is on a small data plate and is located on the right side firewall by the air filter. At this point, I believe the serial number and body number should match. I have seen several CJ2A’s where this is the case. However, this is not written in stone. If you have an original CJ2A where the serial and body number does not match, I would like to hear from you. Early production engine serial numbers were located behind the oil filter, like the MB, and on later engines the number was on a boss above the water pump and in front of the head. The engine number and serial number will not match. Like the MB’s, the engine number got further and further apart as production continue. The very early 2A’s were close. CJ2A # 10115 has engine number 10125. Close but not the same.

    My '47 has the one on the pass side firewall that matches the tag on the drivers side front frame horn (outside) and the ACM (body) number on the drivers side of the engine compartment on the firewall bracket.

    That may explain why I have never seen them on the dash - 47 is the oldest 'original' I have worked on. The '46 I have is on a 70 frame, and one of the '49's I have has been in the family since it came off the line. Never have found the stamp on the frame horn for that one.

    Actually the earliest 2A's had no firewall tags at all and that area is void of holes. I have 10043 and it has engine 10041 and body 44 so even the earliest ones were off.

    DJ (dispatcher Jeep) frames have a number on top of the frame, just in front of the body mount. It usually matches the body number.

    Originality wise you should have a flat head engine. On the drivers side toe board gusset is a body serial number, which will not match the Willys body serial number tag. It should be approx 10,000 lower than your serial number plus or minus a few 1000. ACM the body manufacturer started w/ serial number 1 and Willys w/ 10,001. See my above post w/ serial #10043. This ACM number should match the tailgate number, passenger side edge of the tailgate. These ACM numbers were used until Willys took body manufacturing "in house"
