    Anyone done this before?
I'm just trying to remove the transfercase from the transmittion so that i can rebuild the t case. I have the main part of the overdrive removed and now I'm having a hell of a time trying to remove the OD planetary gears (barrel assy). After removing the retaining clip and then the special washer you are supposed to be able to remove a very tight fitting nut using a 1/2" socket extension(just the square part). the problem is when i try to loosen this nut, the whole engine turns no matter what gear i have the transmittion in. At this point the nut that i'm trying to loosen is not connected to the t case, so it does'nt matter what gear the t case is in. Any Ideas?

Yup, it can Be A Bear :(.

I used an air impact wrench last time & it loosened right off. Otherwise you'll have to find a way to stop the engine rotating, seems to me in Pre-Pneumatic times I found that bracing the rad fan gave enough extra drag to break the nut loose.

If I'm not mistaken, at this point your T case is still connected via the planetary gear set. Put your T case in high range, block the wheels and try cracking the nut loose. If it still won't budge, go buy or rent an electric impact wrench, that'll get it loose. I got one from Harbor Freight. Pretty cheap and a lot easier to setup and use than an air impact. I've got both and I use the electric one the most. The other thing you can try takes two people. Put a socket with a breaker bar on the crankshaft damper nut to keep the engine from turning. It's kinda tight quarters though. Use 1st or Rev gear in the tranny.

No. He's right. Once the OD is off, the tCase is basicly in neutral. Doesn't help any.

What I've done before is take out one of the sparkplugs and fill the piston with nylon rope. When the piston comes up to the compression stroke, it will jam on the rope and not allow the engine to turn.

I use a socket on the front of the crank with a long breaker bar that I wedge into the frame channel

    That too.
Knew you could do it with a T14. wasn't sure about the T90.

Finaly I got it. After trying several things I noticed that the main drive pully on the motor had a large nut on the front of it. I had a second person hold that nut with a large crescent wrench while i turned the special nut holding on the warns planetary gears. once it broke loose I could almost unscrew it by hand.
