This is for those of you that have installed the Melling K-201HV kit (AutoZone $24.99), w/o the thrust plate kit. Any issues w/ extra wear on the housing or impeller?:v6:

See my "Backfired, died" thread. :(

Mine was waaaayyyy too tight and I have some wear after a couple hundred miles.

I have a package from TA Performance waiting on me when I get back home this afternoon. Should be my new oil pump. Not high volume, but with their adjustable pressure rate spring, shims to get the proper spacing and a girdle plate for the cover.

At least get the shim kit from TA if you use the Melling, that's my experience though. I've not seen anyone else that's had any issues. I'm just lucky I guess.

Yep, its sold two ways, by itself and as a package w/ the thrust plate.

Thrust plate, meaning a steel plate that covers the Al cap of the oil pump that's stock?

Either way like I said, I'd pay the $14.95 for the shim kit from TA Performance to get the proper end clearance.

I had to go do an x-ray mid reply and the thread changed.R) That's just the kind of thing I was worried about. The engine has never had any oil pressure problems yet and w/ only 26K miles I think I'll pass on the HV pump at this point. Thanks Sparky.:v6:

    Sorry, I edited it.

I searched for the PN to confirm what I thought it was and edited my reply then.

I wonder if I can just change the spring. Oil pumps are positive displacement so I should be able to modify the pressure that way if I need to. Right? It would be an easy fix even after the engine is back in the jeep and I've checked it out.:v6:

Hold off until I get my adjustable spring put in from TA Perf. I'll let you know how well it works. ;)

Won't have any effect on pressure at idle but at higher RPM it will.

Supposed to be better than a color coded spring, you can "tune it" to your needs.

Sounds cool. After I get it all back together, if I don't like the pressure I'll holler at you. Thanks.:v6:

I have just been researching this very subject and stumbled upon a really good write-up over at TB. I plan on re-tracing this guys procedure, with fresh photos, and bringing it over here as a tech write-up. It received solid reviews over there! We are going to try this out on Jerry's 225 then repeat it on my 231.

I have read mixed feelings about the HV kit (not absolutely neccessary) and the TA shim kit appears to be the ticket for a precise tolerance 8)

    Jon,

Let me know if you guys need a hand. I wouldn't mind seeing this done as I will have do it at some point this spring.

Definately post what you think Sparky. I figure I might as well replace while the engine is out.

I wouldn't use all of this guys write up. I actually have all the photos outlining a complete rebuild of the pump and adding the Mellings kit. He shortcutted alot out of his rebuild that I included in my photos and such. He also screwed up by lapping his bottom cover to the suppossed 4 micron finish. When mating a gasket surface you want a rougher surface so the gasket has something to bite against. Thats why there is a spec for a head surface on engine blocks, so the head gaskets don't float around. My engine idles with 40psi of presure once its warmed up, and runs 60-70psi at 2500rpm.

FWIW the TA Performance kits are Melling kits but the adjustable pressure regulator and mylar shims are theirs. So buy the oil pump from Autozone sheeper and get the adjustable regulator and shim kit from TA Performance IMO.
